Economic impact of Canadian mining in Latin America

This project will research the economic impact of Canadian mining investments in two Latin American countries: Argentina and Peru. That impact is further specified into employment (direct and indirect), local business linkages and taxation income obtained from Canadian-owned mining operations there. Controlling for the differences among Canadian mining companies present in these two countries, the other variables of interest will be the depth of mining policy expertise already developed by the regulatory authorities of Argentina and Peru and the degree of decentralization achieved in decision-making on mining issues in each of them.

The method followed will be of a structured comparison that can account for how differences in hostgovernment knowledge of mining and levels of decentralization can account (or not) for the differences between what Peru and Argentina are obtaining from Canadian mining investment there. The research partners are from the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru and the Universidad Nacional de San Juan (Argentina). The fieldwork will be done in two different provinces of Argentina (Santa Cruz and San Juan), and in two different regions of Peru (Huancash and Cajamarca), as well as in Toronto and Vancouver.
