Des arbres et des champs contre la pauvreté au Mali

Canadian partner:Université Laval
Developing country partner: Institut polytechnique rural de formation et de recherche appliquée (IPR/IFRA)
Project duration:April 2007 - March 2013

Project purpose:
The project aims to increase and diversify the production while making optimal use of local resources. Its seeks to foster agroforestry practices and to strengthen the teaching, research and response capacity of the Institut polytechnique rural de formation et de recherche appliquée (IPR/IFRA) in agroforestry, thus ensuring that the institution is in a position to fully play a key role in this area at the regional and national levels.

Key results to date:
The skills of the faculty, as well as the resources and expertise in agroforestry at IPR/IFRA have improved, allowing for French language master's programs in this field which are currently unparalleled on the African continent. Five IPR/IFRA professors have undertaken master's studies at Université Laval. Three of them have returned to Mali and are expected to submit their theses shortly. More than 20 of their colleagues have taken part in two professional development courses given in Mali: one on agroforestry, the other on gender equality. Eight graduates from Université Laval, with the support of IPR/IFRA students and faculty, have contributed to various works, inventories and surveys related to the implementation of demonstration plots and the development of pilot agroforestry activities targeting rural populations. The project also assures the publication of Sahel Agroforesterie, a rare French language periodical on the subject in Africa.
