Development of Human Resources in Nursing Health

Canadian partner:University of Windsor
Developing country partner: Jordan University of Science and Technology
Project duration:July 1995 - September 2001

Project purpose:
The project aimed to enhance the ability of the faculty of nursing at the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) to offer nursing education and courses for practising nurses in the Irbid region of northeast Jordan.

Key results to date:
The expertise of the JUST faculty members in program, course and curriculum development increased as they worked with their Canadian colleagues to develop a framework for academic review of the baccalaureate program at JUST. As a result, the undergraduate nursing curriculum was reviewed and upgraded throughout the project, and programs were kept relevant and current. By 2001, over 900 students were enrolled in the baccalaureate nursing program at JUST. As a whole, the project provided professional education experiences to approximately 2,000 women who fulfil the region's needs for well-qualified health care workers. Similarly, hospitals in the region have a greater understanding of the need to provide educational opportunities for staff nurses in order for them to be current in clinical practice. Staff nurses who participated in workshops, programs and certification have become trainers within their own institutions. Some of the nurses have furthered their education at the baccalaureate and master's levels.
