Distance Learning for Seed Technology

Canadian partner:University of Guelph
Developing country partner: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University
Project duration:November 1995 - December 2003

Project purpose:
The project aimed at increasing sustainable food production in India's Tamil Nadu state through enhanced extension methods and resources for improved seed technology applications. It also helped provide the capacity and infrastructure for equity and accessibility of educational services in seed technology to marginalized farmers, especially women.

Key results to date:
A total of 31 TNAU faculty, including 10 women, were trained in distance-learning methods and techniques with special emphasis on delivery of seed technology to farmers. Participatory and learner-centred teaching have been introduced at TNAU. Key personnel at TNAU's outreach research stations were trained in extension work, marketing and delivery. Twenty-seven extension modules on various crops were produced in Tamil and English and are being delivered to farmers in collaboration with the Department of Seed Certification and the Ministry of Agriculture. Six videos on different crops have been produced. A functional office that had been set up for the project at TNAU was merged with the Department of Seed Technology as the project became part of the program offered by the university. A revolving fund has been set up so that the fees collected through this program can be used to improve and sustain it.
