| Project duration: | September 1995 - December 2000 |
Project purpose:
In keeping with the countries' goal of having all their school teachers trained by 2000, the project developed an educational infrastructure to train and certify teachers working in Montserrat and Anguilla and to provide professional development for certified teachers and principals in both countries.
Key results to date:
The capacity of Anguilla and Montserrat to train people in education was strengthened through the education of a core group of principals, certified and uncertified teachers and tutors to provide continuing education to teachers on both islands. An environmental education component of the elementary school curriculum in Anguilla was developed, implemented and evaluated by trained participating teachers. During the project, 78 elementary school students and at least 12 teachers benefited from the new curriculum. The curriculum documents were presented to Anguilla's minister of education, secretary of education, chief education officer and curriculum development officer. The project also linked other agencies and private businesses with a strengthened Department of Education, particularly in support of the department's environmental initiatives. The leadership skills of 16 elementary school principals from Montserrat and Anguilla were strengthened through participation in project leadership courses. All principals in Anguilla have now taken the leadership courses; however, the volcanic crisis that culminated in 1998 prevented the full achievement of expected results in Montserrat.
