Canadian partner:Concordia University
Developing country partner: University of the North, Qwaqwa Campus
Project duration:June 1996 - March 2001

Project purpose:
The project aimed to assist in the improvement of the quality of human resources available in the field of education in South Africa.

Key results to date:
Human resources in education have been strengthened at UNIQWA and in the northeastern region of Free State. Three of the 18 participating master's students were junior faculty members at UNIQWA and all but one of the others were working in local education systems. Soon after the end date of the project, four of the 18 participating master's students had completed their theses and graduated. Five others had submitted theses for evaluation. Skills of other local teachers throughout the region increased as a result of participation in the project-led in-service workshops.

Agroforestry: Southern Africa

Canadian partner:University of Alberta
Developing country partner: University of Zimbabwe
Project duration:August 1996 - June 2002

Project purpose:
The project aimed to increase the capacity of southern African countries, particularly Zimbabwe, to educate and train human resources to meet development needs in agroforestry.

Key results to date:
The project vastly increased the capacity at the University of Zimbabwe to engage in agroforestry projects. Evidence of this was seen in large increases in outside funding and international requests for expertise in natural resource management and environmental protection. More than 12 papers were accepted by international publications and presentations of research results in areas relevant to agroforestry policy were made to policy-makers. Beyond the University of Zimbabwe, more than 200 professionals are employing knowledge and techniques gained through participation in the project in their everyday duties. Links between the participating institutions have been sustained and expanded to include involvement in several new initiatives involving organizations such as the Canadian International Development Agency, Britain's Department for International Development, the International Development Research Centre and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research.
