DESS en démocratie et gouvernance

Canadian partner:Université de Sherbrooke
Developing country partner: Université d'Abomey-Calavi
Project duration:April 2004 - September 2010

Project purpose:
The project aims to enable the Université d'Abomey-Calavi to develop a specialization in democracy and governance that is adapted to the reality and context of Benin and other countries in West and Central Africa.

Key results to date:
The graduate diploma in democracy and governance was formalized by the Université Abomey-Calavi (UAC) Rectorate. Of the 182 students who were trained, 120 hold senior management positions in public administration, and 62 students work for organizations engaged in democracy and governance. Thirteen UAC professors received professional development scholarships and now teach most of the courses. The partners established a research structure comprising at least five Benin professors and as many Canadian professors. Thirteen Benin professors were trained in action research. Action research was carried out in Cotonou, notably on community management of domestic waste, small and medium-sized enterprise management, forced marriages in the area, as well as strategic sustainable planning for the two national parks. Forty-five public lectures were given and attended by an average of 50 participants. In September 2010, an international scientific research symposium was held at the Université de Sherbrooke which drew some 40 participants.
