Building Capacity to Manage Aquaculture

Canadian partner:University of Victoria
Developing country partner: Burapha University
Project duration:August 2001 - December 2007

Project purpose:
The purpose of the project is to contribute to the design and implementation of aquaculture development initiatives in Thailand that are socially and environmentally responsible.

Key results to date:
Burapha University now has an improved ability to manage aquaculture development in Thailand. The project made possible the creation of a geomatics laboratory with specialized equipment and software, an electronic classroom to aid in teaching and an aquaculture management course. Faculty and staff in the department of aquatic sciences have received both short- and long-term training in geographical information systems and remote sensing. They have also received the seafood hazard and critical control point certification required of all seafood exporters. Two faculty members presently completing their PhD programs at the University of Victoria will return home to implement aquaculture policy and management projects in their country. The final stages of the project are focusing on community outreach through the development of shellfish sanitation guidelines and a sustainable aquaculture guidebook for shrimp farmers. These tools will help farmers to minimize health risks to consumers and to produce an environmentally friendly product.
