Education and Professional Development in Environmental Issues in St. Lucia

Canadian partner:Nipissing University
Developing country partner: Sir Arthur Lewis Community College
Project duration:November 1995 - November 1999

Project purpose:
The project aimed to develop a self-sustaining program, through which St. Lucian students graduating with a four-year environmental degree in Canada will deliver a certificate program in environmental and resource management, offered yearly to 30 selected civil servants from St. Lucia, who are employed in relevant ministries.

Key results to date:
The partner institutions were able to develop a new one-year certificate program in environmental management, sustained by the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. The program started in 1997 with the enrolment of 25 students from various ministries, the education service and NGOs working in areas related to the environment. As a result of student recommendations for more practical experience in environmental impact analysis, the certificate program was successfully converted into a two-year diploma program. Fifteen students who had successfully completed the certificate program enrolled in the diploma program, which was approved by the academic board of the college. In addition to the new certificate and diploma programs, six St. Lucian project participants graduated with a BA (honours) in environmental geography from Nipissing University. Five returned to St. Lucia and are using their skills in their work in the public service and private organizations. Many other environmental and economic development planners in St. Lucia benefited from three six-week summer training programs between 1991 and 1995.
