Project purpose:
The project aimed to strengthen Sri Lanka's local-level community and regional planning capabilities by producing planners who are skilled in the use of technical tools and who know how to undertake comprehensive and strategic planning. Community and regional planning programs (one graduate and two undergraduate) were established at three universities. Planners trained at these universities are augmenting human resources in the country's central, southern and northern regions.
Key results to date:
New planning programs are offered at two of the three universities in Sri Lanka: the undergraduate program at the University of Jaffna began in 2002 with 82 students; two courses have been offered at the University of Ruhuna and plans to offer a full undergraduate program are in place; the graduate program at the University of Peradeniya was expected to begin in October 2004. New relevant planning courses continue to be developed and assessed. Participating Sri Lankan universities have improved communications in areas relevant to democratic planning and have developed networks with relevant local planning practitioners and government officials.
