Project purpose:
The project aims were, first, to strengthen the academic program for human resources development and continuing education (undergraduate, graduate and in-service training) in public health at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH), with emphasis on social and cultural psychiatry and, second, to develop an extension program for community-based mental health services at the district level (Independencia District), focusing on priority mental health issues within the broad field of psychosocial health and community mental health.

Key results to date:
A master's program in mental health at UPCH and a module for distance learning and continuing education directed at graduate students and mental health professionals are operational. A review of the academic program, curriculum and mental health content of the program and courses offered by FASPA has been completed. Relevant international summer courses and workshops have been offered by McGill and UPCH. The mental health assessment and inventory baseline study in the Independencia District have been completed and results were distributed to academic and government institutions in Lima. The design of a service extension program (Phase I) in juvenile violence in the Independencia District has been completed. A video documentary on mental illness in Peru was produced for the development education of the Canadian public. Instructional materials for primary health care workers were produced.
