Project purpose:
The project will strengthen institutional and human resource capacity in environmental governance to promote an integrated approach that reconciles pro-poor economic growth with community-based, sustainable resource and environmental management in Bangladesh. It will impact upon poverty reduction and sustainable development throughout Bangladesh and beyond by sharing experience and knowledge on environmental governance innovation and by demonstrating successful local approaches to greening micro-enterprises.
Key results to date:
A Masters of Resource and Environmental Management program with a Resource Center has been established at NSU. The Professional Certificate program created at the IGS, BRAC University trained 24 students in two batches (12 respectively in each of 2009 and 2010-11 Batch). Two new faculty positions have been created at NSU and two faculty members are currently pursuing their PhD at the University of Manitoba's Natural Resources Institute. Forty students are currently enrolled in the Masters program. A manual for implementing green micro-credit has been developed through workshops. Seven women-led green micro-credit programs have been launched in two rural sites. Technical reports have been prepared on national need assessment of human resources in the area of natural resource and environmental management, gender situation of partner institutions, and capacity and needs of NSU. The Bangladesh Network for Environmental Governance (BNEG) has been established to promote policy dialogue and is led by one of the leading policy advisers to the Government of Bangladesh.
