Nepal Conservation and Community Outreach

Canadian partner:Lakehead University
Developing country partner: Tribhuvan University
Project duration:November 1997 - March 2003

Project purpose:
The project aimed to strengthen the ability of the Institute of Forestry (IOF) at Tribhuvan University to upgrade the professional and technical qualifications of Nepal's university instructors and elementary and secondary school teachers. In addition, the project helped establish an array of self-sustaining, community-based forestry and agroforestry demonstration sites in key locations in Nepal.

Key results to date:
About 50 secondary school teachers are using new knowledge about forestry conservation and environmental sustainability in their classes. Three new conservation centres are providing information to students and community members from three regions. The IOF faculty, students and other professionals have a better understanding of advanced issues related to forestry as a result of their training. Sustainable approaches to land use are being promoted with the establishment of two pilot project areas that include demonstration sites and tree seedling nurseries that are maintained by women's community groups and students.
