Chapter 1 presents an overview of the state of R&D in Canada, documenting the roles played by key sectors, including Canada’s universities, based on their investments in R&D and their contributions as performers of research.
Chapter 2 examines how the heightened recognition of the critical links between university R&D and national prosperity and quality of life, the global race for research talent, the growing costs and complexity of university research, the increased emphasis on measuring outcomes, and the strong impetus to partner across institutions, sectors and geographic boundaries will impact university research in the years to come.
Chapter 3 explores in detail how Canadian universities collaborate with private sector, government, community and international partners, looking at the wide range of these research partnerships, the mechanisms that encourage them and the opportunities and challenges they bring.
Chapter 4 documents the benefits of these partnerships and of university research more generally. These benefits can be broadly summarized as: people educated in a research-rich environment; knowledge generated and disseminated across disciplines, sectors and countries; and innovations that fuel new products, processes, services, policies, behaviours and understanding.
