Parachute into King’s to learn about our business program
King’s University College at Western is hosting their Fall Welcome Day on Saturday, November 8th from 1:00-3:30pm. King’s Fall Welcome Day provides a comprehensive overview of King’s academic programs, services and clubs. Prospective students will have the opportunity to meet with staff, faculty and upper-year students, as well as observe mini-lectures to get a taste of the King’s experience! The day concludes with a tour of the campus, conducted by a King’s student tour guide.

To incorporate this year’s AUCC theme, Big Ideas for Better Business, we have invited current students in our Management and Organizational Studies program to discuss their experiences in their internships and the innovative Global Business Opportunities program.

King’s alumnus, Michael Potter ’12 (Political Science), will be there to share the story of his new business venture, Parachute Coffee, with the Welcome Day guests.

Grandes idées, bonnes affaires!

Avec 98 % de l’activité aérospatiale québécoise concentrée dans le Grand Montréal, la région figure parmi les plus grands centres aérospatiaux du monde, avec Seattle et Toulouse.  Depuis plus de 10 ans, Polytechnique Montréal travaille de concert avec Bombardier Aéronautique afin d’assurer une relève de main d’œuvre qualifiée et compétitive en intégrant des situations réelles vécues en entreprise dans son programme de formation.

Considérant les besoins criant de l’industrie, c’est à l’automne 2009 que Polytechnique Montréal accueille sa toute première cohorte d’étudiants en génie aérospatial.  Pionnier dans le domaine, elle offre le seul programme spécialisé au Québec.  De plus, en mai 2010, des étudiants de Polytechnique Montréal fondaient la société technique Oronos. L'objectif de ce comité étudiant est de concevoir des prototypes innovateurs dans le but de participer à des compétitions universitaires et de partager une passion commune pour l'aérospatiale et l'astronautique auprès du public. Voilà un excellente façon d’associer la formation au marché du travail !

Dans le cadre de sa journée portes ouvertes, Polytechnique Montréal démontrera cette grande idée… cette bonne affaire!

Lors de la journée portes ouvertes du 9 novembre 2014 le public pourra échanger avec les acteurs de ce partenariats, étudiants, industriels et professeurs. Tout au long de la journée, des ateliers seront organisés durant lesquels des témoignages seront présentés et des échanges avec le public seront possibles.

Opening Doors for Innovation: McMaster Innovation Showcase 2014
McMaster Innovation Showcase 2014 is an opportunity for McMaster to demonstrate the exciting technologies that have been developed at the University, feature the initiatives underway relating to entrepreneurship and to engage with the community.  Organized by the McMaster Industry Liaison Office, the goal is to help McMaster create a culture of innovation, commercialization and community engagement. This year's event will feature:
  •  Keynote address by Mike Kirkup, Director of the VeloCity program at the University of Waterloo.  Mike will share his experiences running Waterloo’s well known VeloCity program which focusses on youth entrepreneurship
  • A roundtable discussion featuring participants from McMaster and the local community. The roundtable will be hosted by CBC Hamilton producer Rick Hughes and discuss how McMaster can redouble its efforts at stimulating youth entrepreneurship and encouraging engagement between the University and the local community
  • Technology presentations from McMaster researchers
  • An Open Doors event where various institutes at the McMaster Innovation Park will open their doors for tours and presentations including The Forge, CANMET, CLSA and the Sustainable Archaeology facility
  • A Poster competition, containing inventions and discoveries with commercial potential and social impact, as well as a pitch competition
  • Breakout session hosted by the Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD).  The CDRD is Canada's fully integrated national drug development and commercialization centre.  The primary goal of the centre is to provide a bridge between science and business and to enable researchers from institutes like McMaster to advance early stage drug candidates.  Representatives from CDRD will discuss the centres goals and successes as well as the project submission process.  There will also be opportunities for one on one discussions with researchers
  • Breakout sessions with NSERC and OCE, attendees will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from these agencies to discuss funding opportunities for potential projects
  • Networking opportunities with entrepreneurs, industry representatives and academic researchers who are developing and commercializing new technologies
  • The McMaster Innovator Awards which recognize innovators within the McMaster community for their contributions to research and commercialization success

Open Doors, Open Knowledge at UOIT
The University of Ontario Institute of Technology recently commissioned its Social Research Centre to survey many small- and medium-size organizations in the community that have partnered with the university. The results will be released at a November 13 event hosted by the university as part of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada’s Open Doors, Open Knowledge. The event includes a trade show where businesses and organizations can meet UOIT experts who will describe how partnering with UOIT can generate business, secure great employees and improve productivity. The morning will also include a moderated panel discussion with businesses about the benefits and challenges of university-business partnerships. WHEN: Thursday, November 13, 2014 from 9 to 11 a.m.

Roundtable - Supporting Agricultural Small Business in Southern Alberta
On November 14, the University of Lethbridge is opening its doors to southern Alberta community and business leaders as part of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada’s (AUCC) Open Doors, Open Knowledge initiative, an annual national event celebrating the many ways universities contribute to economic prosperity and quality of life in Canada. This year, Open Doors, Open Knowledge is showcasing the role of University relationships with small- and medium-sized enterprises in preparing students for rewarding careers and helping local businesses innovate and grow. The University of Lethbridge has recently received two significant investments from private donors that will further the institution’s commitment to work with agriculturally-based businesses in southern Alberta. In July, the U of L announced it will receive $1 million over five years from the Potato Growers of Alberta (PGA), McCain Foods, ConAgra Lamb Weston and Cavendish Farms to establish a Chair in potato science. In June, Cor Van Raay, the founder of Cor Van Raay Farms, donated $5 million to the U of L and Lethbridge College to establish an agribusiness program in southern Alberta. The U of L will host a noon-hour roundtable that will focus on the role universities, and specifically the University of Lethbridge, can play in further supporting agriculturally-based businesses in southern Alberta. The event will feature a short presentation by David Hill, director of Centres and Institutes at the U of L, as well as an open discussion. This is an exceptional hands-on opportunity for students, helping them learn to market their competencies effectively to employers in a realistic interview environment. At the same time, it provides employers with a window into student recruitment and build UVic's relationships with local organizations. ArtsFest 2014
Selections from The University of Winnipeg's rich arts and cultural heritage collection were on display September 25-28 at the second annual UWinnipeg ArtsFest. ArtsFest runs in conjunction with the national Culture Days and UWinnipeg's annual Homecoming. The university showcased highlights from its large visual art collection, unique books, one of a kind artifacts, replications of ancient legionary equipment and student artwork, as well as performances by UWinnipeg alumni, including Freya Olafson's Hyper, Virtuosi Concerts, The Downtown Jazz Band and the UWSA Freestyle Festival.
