Profil

Known as a centre of excellence for teaching, learning, and applied research, Vancouver Island University (VIU) is producing quality graduates that are in demand by employers across the country and around the world. VIU values a diverse range of training and education and offers programs from basic literacy to vocational programs, trades, undergraduate and graduate degrees. VIU encourages all students to explore their potential, discover more about their world and excel in both life and learning. Based on a long history of vocational and college training, VIU has evolved into a thriving university that plays an important role in the educational, cultural and economic life of the region. The main campus is located in Nanaimo on the east coast of Vancouver Island and there are regional campuses in Duncan and Powell River, as well as a campus centre in Parksville/Qualicum.

Through academic programs and other aspects of campus life, VIU provides students with opportunities to participate in a variety of applied, experiential and research activities. VIU offers a wide range of academic, applied, career/technical, vocational and developmental programs leading to certificates, diplomas and degrees, as well as continuing education courses. VIU offers 13 undergraduate degree credentials, with dozens of options for majors and minors in arts and science fields. At the graduate level, VIU offers a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Education in Educational Leadership, a Master of Education in Special Education, and a Master of Arts in Sustainable Leisure Management.

In 2011-12, Vancouver Island University enrolled more than 17,000 students (or more than 8,100 full-time equivalent students). Significant among them are a large number of Aboriginal students from the region and beyond who constitute 12 percent of our student body. Aboriginal education is an important priority of the institution.

VIU’s diverse range of training and education that includes basic literacy, vocational programs, trades, undergraduate, and graduate degrees makes VIU unique amongst Canada’s universities. Undergraduate programming at VIU provides many opportunities for learning in traditional degree disciplines in arts and sciences as well as practical skills training in health, education, business, graphics, interior design, and many other fields.

Fisheries and aquaculture has long been an area of specialization at VIU and the Centre for Shellfish Research as well as the new Deep Bay Marine Field Station play an integral role in bringing together ecosystem management, community-based decision-making and interdisciplinary research.

VIU also recognizes the need for well-educated workers to meet the demands of society in transition. Human Services programs are preparing students to support some of the most vulnerable members of society in areas such as early childhood development, child and youth care and community support.
