Profil

Founded in 1967 as a liberal arts institution, the University of Lethbridge (U of L) has evolved into a comprehensive university with a broad range of programs. As a comprehensive academic and research institution within Alberta’s postsecondary framework, the university provides undergraduate and graduate programs across areas of study. More than 500 faculty members educate nearly 8,500 students in education, fine arts, health sciences, humanities, management, nursing, sciences and social sciences, leading to academic degrees at the bachelor, master’s and doctoral levels. The institution also provides degree completion opportunities for transfer students and diploma graduates, certificate programs, post-baccalaureate certificate programs, post-graduate certificate programs, and open studies for lifelong learners.

The U of L’s main campus is located in Lethbridge, Alberta. Steps from the Rocky Mountains, two hours south of Calgary, and an hour north of the U.S. border, Lethbridge is a small city of 88,000 nestled in the southwest corner of Alberta. Frequent warm westerly chinook winds during the winter give Lethbridge some of the most moderate winters in Western Canada. In addition to the main Lethbridge campus, the U of L offers selected programs at campuses in Calgary and Edmonton.

The U of L has experienced unprecedented growth over the past decade. The growth in student enrolment has been reflected in the landscape of the campus with the addition of nine new buildings in the past 10 years. In spite of this growth, the U of L maintains a close-knit feel and a dedication to our history as a liberal arts institution.

As one of Canada’s top primarily undergraduate universities, the University of Lethbridge strives to support the academic, professional, and personal development of our students. Students will find a wide range of academic and personal supports, as well as numerous clubs, events, and activities to enhance student life, including an outstanding recreation centre.

The University of Lethbridge offers an intimate learning environment that involves students in research from the undergraduate through PhD levels. This includes giving students the opportunity to work alongside leading academic scholars who are recognized for their teaching excellence, scientific inquiry, creative expression, and community citizenship. The university’s research priorities include long-standing areas of preeminence, emerging areas of inquiry, and those of strategic importance to our community. These priorities cross disciplinary boundaries and promote collaborative research across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and health sciences. With facilities for pursuing original research and creative activities, the university conducts research in all disciplines and is dedicated to research excellence through research centres and institutes. These include the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience, the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy, and the Water Institute for Sustainable Environments.
