Profil

StFX is located in the town of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, nestled along the beautiful northeastern coast of Nova Scotia, near Cape Breton Island.

St. Francis Xavier University offers what so many of Canada’s top students want: a high quality education, focused principally on the undergraduate, in a vibrant residential setting. StFX is dedicated to meeting the needs of today’s students s through outstanding teaching, exceptional hands-on research experiences, and unique opportunities to contribute to communities at home and abroad.

For 160 years, StFX has helped shape the world in which we live. From its halls have come a prime minister, provincial premiers, Rhodes scholars, scientists, and religious and business leaders.

StFX brings together approximately 4,200 students in arts, science, business and information systems, education, and applied programs.

At StFX, a key strength is the fact that undergraduate students remain the clear and undisputed priority. From day one, StFX students are taught directly by faculty with PhDs – 95 percent of core programs are taught by full-time faculty. Faculty members know their students by name, and know them personally. Small class sizes mean students have access to committed teachers and researchers.

Because StFX is a small university where research is a priority, students receive individual attention and numerous opportunities, often early in their academic career, to collaborate with faculty and gain graduate-level research experience. Results are impressive, and, graduating students are exceptionally well prepared for graduate studies or professional programs.

Experiential learning is a hallmark. StFX pioneered Canada’s first Service Learning program in 1996 — a rich dimension to student learning — and opportunities for international learning are higher than ever. Across the board, program choice has never been greater and student engagement in research continues to expand.

StFX also stands out for its longstanding tradition of social responsibility and community service. The community development work at the heart of the Antigonish Movement has been carried out locally by StFX’s extension department since 1928, and globally by StFX’s world-renowned Coady International Institute since 1959. Arts students have opportunity for concentrated study in social justice through the Social Justice Colloquium, introduced in 2013.

StFX has a new, state-of-the-art business school and leadership centre, a new physical sciences complex, and a premier technology partnership with Apple Canada. As one of four primary partners in ACEnet (Atlantic Computational Excellence Network), StFX is a significant player in computation-based research in Canada. Environmental and health research are major thrusts for interdisciplinary work. StFX is home to the Environmental Sciences Research Centre, the largest such research group east of Montreal, and to the National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health, one of only six NCCs in Canada. The university is also home to seven Canada Research Chairs.
