Simon Fraser University opened its doors to 2,500 students on September 9, 1965. Today, with more than 35,000 students, 6,500 faculty and staff, and 120,000 alumni, SFU consistently ranks among Canada’s top comprehensive universities.
Located on the scenic west coast of British Columbia, SFU pioneered an open, inclusive approach to higher education that fuelled an enduring interplay between learning, discovery and community outreach. In early 2012, SFU launched a new vision to be the leading engaged university as defined by its dynamic integration of innovative education, cutting-edge research and far-reaching community engagement.
The university’s overlap and integration of graduate and undergraduate education, advanced research and global connectedness makes a profound difference to how its students adapt and achieve, how its research is advanced and applied, and how its many partnerships are served and strengthened around the world.
At three culturally diverse campuses in Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey, SFU offers more than 145 programs across eight faculties: Applied Sciences; Arts and Social Sciences; Business; Communication, Art and Technology; Education; Environment; Health Sciences; Science.
SFU aims to be a world leader in knowledge mobilization building on a strong foundation of fundamental research. The university’s seven strategic research themes reflect its cross-disciplinary strengths: origins; communication, computation, and technology; culture, society, and human behaviour; economic organization, public policy, and the global community; environment, resources, and conservation; health and biomedical sciences; and pedagogy.
SFU offers students many experiential learning opportunities such as work-integrated learning, international field schools and exchanges, and the innovative Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue program focusing on social and civic issues.
The original campus, designed by renowned Canadian architects Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey, now includes more than 36 academic buildings and is adjacent to UniverCity, a multi-award winning sustainable residential community atop Burnaby Mountain.
In 1989, SFU opened Vancouver’s first downtown university campus at Harbour Centre in the heart of the city’s financial district. The campus has since expanded to include the Segal Graduate School of Business, the Morris J Wosk Centre for Dialogue and the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts—home to SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts.
In 2001, SFU launched a stunning new campus in Surrey, BC’s fastest-growing city. In just a decade, the campus, designed by renowned architect Bing Thom has grown exponentially and is helping to revitalize Surrey’s downtown core.
All three campuses are connected by an urban transit system.
SFU is also the first non-US member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)—the world’s largest college sports association. Among the university’s most famous athletes are the late Terry Fox, whose foundation has raised millions for cancer research; Olympic wrestlers Daniel Igali and Carol Huynh; and National Basketball Association coach Jay Triano.
