Ryerson is a Canadian leader in innovative, career-focused education and a university clearly on the move. A distinctly urban university with a mission to serve societal need, it is committed to engaging its community. A combination of theory and professional learning provides graduate and undergraduate education that distinguishes Ryerson from other universities. That difference is reflected in the program mix and the continual reinforcement of classroom lectures through formal contact with business and industry, laboratory work, field trips and work experience in the professional community. Innovation and entrepreneurship are a focus, exemplified by the Digital Media Zone (DMZ), a multidisciplinary workspace for student entrepreneurs. Since its launch in 2010, the DMZ has helped more than 200 innovators to incubate and accelerate 62 start-ups. Nineteen alumni companies have moved on from the DMZ to put their experiential learning into practice.
Ryerson offers more than 100 undergraduate, master’s and PhD programs in five faculties — Arts; Ccommunication and Design; Community Services; Engineering and Architectural Science; Science; the Ted Rogers School of Management – and the Yeates School of Graduate Studies. Ryerson has 2,300 master’s and doctoral students in dozens of programs. The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education is Canada’s largest, with 70,000 registrations annually.
Ryerson is helping to reshape downtown Toronto with campus developments that include the Ryerson Athletics Centre at the Gardens; the School of Image Arts building and Ryerson Image Centre; the Student Learning Centre on the city’s main street; and a planned multi-use building for health sciences, study space, classrooms, modular labs for research initiatives and a student residence. .
Ryerson is experiencing rapid growth in basic and applied research across a wide variety of disciplines. In the past five years, funded research activity at the university has doubled. The university also enjoys a reputation for collaboration with community and industrial partners in the pursuit of its research objectives. Investigators shape research questions around real-world problems, often working together across disciplinary boundaries to find innovative solutions.
Areas of research focus include: digital media; energy, sustainability and the environment; health and well being; creative expression and cultural industries; entrepreneurship and innovation.
