In 1995, Royal Roads pioneered a teaching model that combines short, intensive on-campus residencies with online instruction. This blended learning approach to post-secondary education is key to the university’s continued success, giving students the flexibility to live their lives while pursuing educational goals.
Royal Roads has purposefully built a suite of high-quality, interdisciplinary undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs, as well as lifelong learning opportunities targeted to meet the needs of busy professionals. If offers programs in business, communications and culture, continuing studies, education, environment and sustainability, executive education, interdisciplinary studies, leadership studies, peace and conflict management, and tourism and hospitality.
There are over 500 faculty members, including 51 core faculty members and 450 associate faculty.
The university sits on a 227-hectare campus along the ocean, surrounded by old-growth forest, gardens, and hiking trails. The centrepiece is Hatley Castle, a National Historic Site that is over 100 years old.
The university enjoys a diverse selection of learners with a wide variety in ages and life experiences due to a flexible admission program that allows students to supplement their academic qualifications where necessary and apply life lessons and real-world experience in lieu of formal academic accomplishments. RRU students bring their work experience, along with their cultural and professional experience into the classroom providing additional value to the programs, as students learn from each other as well as from the instructors.
Independent evaluation measures show that its graduates have given the university very high scores in academic quality, faculty quality, relevance to career goals, staff support, and quality of fellow students. As well, the university has been ranked at the top of Canadian colleges and universities for providing a high level of academic challenge and for active and collaborative learning.
Knowledge, methodologies, and competencies are obtained through student research projects, case studies, or other learning activities modeled on real-world concerns, and the intimate class sizes allow for personalized interaction between instructors and students.
Master’s degrees at Royal Roads are completed in one or two years, while undergraduate programs may be completed through an accelerated 12-month on-campus program, or a two-year, blended program. The university has recently launched a series of four-year undergraduate programs that will provide pathways into its well established degree completion offerings. Royal Roads University’s Doctor of Social Sciences program is Canada’s first applied research doctorate designed exclusively for working professionals. The university also delivers an extensive selection of custom and executive education programs, as well as international opportunities that provide top-quality Canadian education abroad.
