OCAD University is Canada’s largest university of art and design, bringing imagination to education, research and creative enterprise. Since 1876, OCAD U’s specialized, studio-based programs have inspired students, faculty and alumni to push the boundaries of art, design and scholarship. Today, the university combines the strength of that tradition with new approaches that emphasize collaboration, innovation and the integration of emerging technologies. OCAD U’s 20 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs offer majors covering a wide range, from advertising to Aboriginal visual culture, and allow students to benefit from an interdisciplinary university education that blends academic rigour with the experimental freedom of the studio.
OCAD U is located in the heart of Toronto, Canada’s largest centre for design, culture and business. As one of the world’s most multicultural cities, Toronto brings a diversity of creative forces together. OCAD U supports a vibrant community life, offering special events, lecturess and conferences, visiting artists’ programs and myriad exhibition venues.
In 2011, OCAD U’s incoming class represented more than 40 different countries of origin. These students enjoy a diverse, one-of-a-kind learning environment, where the university’s 460 faculty include leading art, design and new-media practitioners and scholars. The integrated mix of studio programs with a liberal studies education provides students with in-depth history and theory, and the analytical skills they need to execute powerful ideas inside the studio.
Central to OCAD U’s graduate programs is a concentrated focus on research that is facilitated by numerous studios and 20 specialized labs. Student researchers apply practice-based methodologies, integrating art and design with other disciplines. OCAD U faculty also research art and design practices through a diversity of cultures and disciplines, forms of literacy, methods and approaches. Practice-based research occurs in collaboration with other knowledge domains, such as computer science, medicine, business applications, linguistics, ethnographic studies, psychology and sociology. OCAD U’s signature research into strategic creativity and design methodologies provides a lens for furthering innovation and creating economic impact.
Research at OCAD U includes multi-institutional projects, such as the Centre for Information Innovation and Data-Driven Design, the Digital Research + Innovation Institute and the Inclusive Design Institute, and spans content ranging from way-finding to digital painting and holography. OCAD U also hosts the Mobile Experience Innovation Centre and the Imagination Catalyst, which facilitate commercialization activities and provide incubator space to new companies.
