Profil

Mount Allison is a primarily undergraduate liberal arts and science university with approximately 2,600 full-time students. The University is located in Sackville, New Brunswick — on Canada’s East Coast. Fifty percent of Mount Allison’s student population is from outside of the province and 10 per cent is international.

The University has 51 Rhodes Scholars — the largest number of Rhodes Scholars per capita in Canada — and has one of the largest endowments per capita among universities in Canada at more than $120 million.

Mount Allison is renowned for providing students with an enriching, diverse, and challenging educational experience. Degrees are offered in arts, commerce, science, fine arts, and music. Interdisciplinary opportunities are available in all areas of study and students can choose from over 40 majors and minors to form a unique program of study that matches their interests and career goals.

Mount Allison has made the strategic decision to remain small. With a 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio, there is a focus on the individual, ensuring students receive personalized, one-on-one attention. The average first-year class size is 65 — one of the smallest in the country — and upper-year classes average 14 students.

The university’s immersive learning community integrates an excellent academic program with an abundance of extracurricular and cultural activities. Students can pursue their passions inside and outside the classroom, which prepares them well for future careers and graduate and professional studies. Mount Allison offers more than 140 clubs and societies and over 30 varsity, club, and intramural sports teams. Students gain a global perspective by participating in study abroad or exchange programs. The International Centre offers a total of 21 programs in 17 countries around the world.

Mount Allison offers unparalleled opportunities for undergraduate research experience. Students can partake in innovative research as early as second year and many even co-publish articles with professors before they graduate. Students enjoy exceptional access to funding for self-directed summer research in all disciplines and regularly present their work at conferences around the world.

High-quality teaching is at the core of what makes Mount Allison unique. Great teaching is based on a relentless pursuit of research interests by faculty. These passionate interests find their way into classrooms, connecting subjects to students in tangible ways and reflecting what is happening in the world. Novel discoveries have come to life at Mount Allison in areas such as cancer treatment, pain relief, and environmental sustainability.

In 2014, Mount Allison will open the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts — a 50,000-square-foot building that will be home to the university’s Fine Arts Department and Drama program. The $30-million centre will feature a large atrium, contemporary art studios, a studio hall, and a 100-seat black box theatre.
