Profil

Established in 1925, Emily Carr University of Art + Design is an accredited, specialized, professional university that encourages research and experimentation at the intersection of art, design, media and technology. The four-year undergraduate degrees in visual arts (BFA), media arts (BMA) and design (BDes), merge critical theory and studio practice in an interdisciplinary environment. The Master of Applied Arts (MAA) degree is a professional, terminal degree offered in Residency and Low Residency models that prepares students to engage in a range of diverse and expanding sectors of culture and creative industry.

Over the last 87 years, the University has had an enormous influence on the development and growth of the arts and design in Canada and internationally around the world. Alumni and faculty are internationally recognized as award-winning creators and thought leaders who have enormous impact on both the cultural sector and economy. A recent survey found 92 percent of graduates working as creative professionals either in their own businesses or in a wide array of leading companies, such as Google, Apple and Hootsuite.

Emily Carr encourages students to develop new and innovative ways of thinking and creating within a university-based curriculum. Offering ten majors housed within four faculties, programs reflect the fluidity of contemporary practice and research in art, design and media. Curriculum is flexible, personal, interdisciplinary and based on the learning needs of students, and includes some of the most sophisticated online courses in Canada. Students have the opportunity to apply for co-op credits and internships during their course of study; recent placements include Microsoft, Lululemon Athletica, Research in Motion, Yelp, Nokia and Electronic Arts among others.

Applied Research is central to the culture of Emily Carr. Along with practice and the science of teaching, it forms a cornerstone of the University. Much of the research is grouped into themes and common interests that faculty, researchers and students share. These include the Social + Interactive Media Centre (SIM Centre), the Stereoscopic 3D Centre (S3D Centre) and the Health Design Lab (HDL).

Surrounded by water, parks and the coastal mountains, Vancouver provides a stunning natural environment and is recognized as one of the top-ten world’s most liveable cities. The third largest city in Canada, metro Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada with a population of 2.3 million people. Emily Carr is located on Granville Island, an urban park in the centre of Vancouver that is home to studios, galleries, theatres, shops and a public market, accessible by foot, vehicle, transit, and water taxi.
