Brescia University College, an affiliate university campus of Western University, is Canada’s only women’s university. Located next to Western’s campus in London, Ontario, Brescia offers students all the advantages of belonging to a small campus while having full access to a larger university’s facilities.
Established as a Catholic college in 1919, Brescia welcomes students of all nationalities and religious faiths. The exchange of different ideas and perspectives fosters community, mutual respect and understanding. As a small college, Brescia provides women with unparalleled opportunities for academic and leadership development. Student-faculty ratio is a remarkable 14:1, while the average first-year class has 40 students.
Located in the city of London, students at Brescia take full advantage of the social and cultural offerings of the city. London is a beautiful, safe and clean city of approximately 450,000 residents, situated two hours west of Toronto.
Brescia offers a range of liberal arts undergraduate degree programs. Unique program offers at Brescia include a pre-university program (co-educational), BSc programs in nutrition and dietetics and in foods science and technology, and the Master of Science in Foods and Nutrition. Brescia has 34 full-time faculty and 20 (FTE) part-time faculty.
Faculties at Brescia are organized in academic divisions. These include: Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Food and Nutritional Sciences, and Sociology and Family Studies.
Brescia has added a number of new modules to its undergraduate programming, including a major in the dimensions of leadership. Brescia’s nutrition programs are accredited by Dietitians of Canada.
Brescia faculty are engaged in independent research and collaborative projects with faculty at both Brescia and Western University. Brescia is a leading institution for “service learning” in Canada, specifically in the Community Development program. Professors provide opportunities for students to bridge classroom learning with the community, while providing real-life experiences to more theoretical study. Students develop their individual values, sense of social responsibility and leadership skills, while engaging in community projects related to their studies. Faculty within the Foods and Nutrition program are also involved in leading research, including a study on childhood obesity in Canada and a groundbreaking project developing probiotic yogurt.
Across disciplines, students are encouraged to assist faculty with their research through placements made possible through a work-study program. Faculty have engaged students in meeting their research objectives while providing them with interesting working opportunities.
