Profile

Founded in 1852 by the Basilian Fathers, St. Michael’s College is the Catholic college in the University of Toronto. As such, it offers students an academic home in a college which has inherited intellectual traditions springing from medieval Europe, combined with full membership in one of Canada’s greatest modern research universities.

Set in its own green space on the St. George (downtown) campus of the University of Toronto, the college is in the heart of the city.

St. Michael’s provides a superior undergraduate education in arts and science which prepares students for full citizenship in an increasingly complex and interdependent world. This mission is undertaken within a milieu in which the Christian faith, in the Catholic tradition, is openly professed and its intellectual heritage explored and developed. At the same time, the college welcomes men and women of every background who wish to become members of its academic community. The university has a graduate Faculty of Theology, in addition to a continuing education division offering general-interest courses and various certificate programs. St. Michael’s is affiliated with the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies and with the Canadian Catholic Bioethics Centre, both of which are located on the St. Michael’s campus.

The Faculty of Theology offers nine graduate degrees and two diploma programs which specialize in education and formation for ministry, including the ordained ministry, religious education and other pastoral ministries. The ThM affords the opportunity for further study to those who have completed an MDiv. The DMin Program offers advanced level theological reflection and research on the practice of ministry. The MA, ThD, and PhD programs are designed to provide a research-oriented education to women and men preparing to teach and pursue research in universities, seminaries or schools of theology.

At the undergraduate level, St. Michael’s offers programs in Mediaeval Studies, Celtic studies, Christianity and Culture, and Book and Media Studies. The Celtic Studies Program attracts visiting professors from Ireland, organizes conferences with international scholars, and offers summer scholarships for students to study across the Atlantic. The Christianity and Culture Program offers students an opportunity to study Christianity from a variety of perspectives and to combine experiential learning and academic study in the concurrent pursuit of an honours BA and a BEd. The Book and Media Studies Program is an interdisciplinary and historical investigation of the role of printing, reading practices, and social media in the development of culture. For incoming students, St. Michael’s offers SMC One: Cornerstone, a first-year program focusing on social justice, which consists of a combination of service-based learning and classroom reflection designed to show the relevance of academic study to the life of the community in which we live.

The John M. Kelly Library, has been in the forefront of the University of Toronto’s leading contribution to the Open Content Alliance and the digitization and dissemination of library holdings. The library has also recently acquired major special collections in the works of spiritual author Henri Nouwen and theologian John Henry Newman, among others.
