Profile

One of Canada’s top universities, Trent University is renowned for encouraging the dynamic interplay of research, teaching and learning, which enhance and energize each other in the classroom and beyond. The university is consistently recognized nationally for faculty who maintain a high level of innovative research activity and a deep commitment to the individual student. Trent distinguishes itself by excellence in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences as well as professional and graduate programs. Trent is dedicated to preparing students to make significant contributions to an increasingly complex world by providing them with a distinctive liberal arts, science or professionally focused education, which is enhanced by global perspectives, experiential learning and interdisciplinary approaches to personal and professional development.

Trent’s Peterborough campus boasts award-winning architecture in a breathtaking natural setting on the banks of the Otonabee River, just 90 minutes from downtown Toronto. Together with Trent University Oshawa Thornton Road Campus, Trent draws excellent students from throughout the country and around the world.

On campus and around the globe, Trent’s researchers are involved in studies of global significance. Trent’s Water Quality Centre houses the world’s leading state-of-the-art instrumentation and is at the core of the Chemical Sciences Building, while the university’s new Life and Health Sciences Building has put the university at the centre of a regional life sciences economic cluster. Trent’s First Peoples House of Learning is a tangible representation of the university’s leading role in establishing North America’s first Indigenous Studies programs.

A vibrant international program at Trent is home to an increasingly diverse community of students from all corners of the globe.

Trent’s Environmental and Resource Science program is the first in Canada to be officially accredited to the National Standard of Environmental Programs by the Canadian Environmental Accreditation Commission (CEAC) of the Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) Canada. In the Forensic Science program, Trent has a permanent crime scene house, used by both undergraduates who are taking courses on how to process evidence at the scene of a crime, and by research students. The Trent/Fleming School of Nursing houses expansive new labs including full simulation labs and learning programs. Emphasizing a holistic approach to healthcare, nursing students are supported in developing both knowledge and skills through lectures, case studies, nursing simulation labs and clinical practice. Trent recently introduced the Bachelor of Arts and Science, and new programs in archaeology, journalism, media studies, and sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Trent has also developed a tradition of interdisciplinary research that focuses on understanding various past and contemporary societies, as well as the relationship between the products of a culture and the social, political and subjective contexts in which they take shape.
