As one of Alberta’s oldest postsecondary institutions, Mount Royal University is renowned for its academic excellence and dedication to student success.
Mount Royal was founded as a college in 1910 and became a university in 2009. Smaller classes, highly qualified faculty who know students by name, personalized student support services – all have been distinctive elements of the Mount Royal experience over the past 10 decades, and its single-minded dedication to premier undergraduate education builds on this legacy.
Mount Royal provides more than 60 bachelor’s degree, applied degree, university transfer, diploma and certificate programs, all designed to support students in becoming thoughtful critical thinkers with a true understanding of community and citizenship.
Programs are offered in arts and science, nursing and health, business, communications, community studies, design, education, performing arts and Aboriginal studies.
The university’s mix of foundational and professional programs features outcomes-based learning, general education, experiential learning and the integration of theory and practice, and every academic program meets community, industry and graduate or professional school needs. Today, more than 80,000 Mount Royal alumni are making a difference in their fields, in their careers and their communities, and around the world.
At Mount Royal, more than 900 tenured and tenure track faculty from every discipline share a passion for teaching that is informed by leading-edge scholarship. The Faculty of Teaching and Learning – unique in Canada – also enables faculty to conduct research into successful student learning and effective teaching, and to enrich their own teaching skills. Mount Royal faculty members also bring their research into the classroom by teaching research techniques, demonstrating cutting-edge work, or directly involving undergraduates in their research projects.
Located in Calgary, Alberta, Mount Royal shares many characteristics with its diverse and dynamic host city: innovation, friendliness, entrepreneurial energy and limitless potential. The park-like campus is centrally located, giving easy access to all the city has to offer, and to spectacular outdoor recreation opportunities in the foothills and Rocky Mountains.
The university is home to research-focused institutes including the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Institute for Nonprofit Studies, the Integrative Health Institute, the Institute for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and the Centre for Child Well-Being as well as a Criminal Justice Research Lab and a Child Development Lab.
With all of those strengths, as well as a vibrant international education program, personalized academic and student support services, highly successful athletics teams, modern facilities and an outstanding recreation centre, Mount Royal University is a diverse, scholarly community where students come face-to-face with their own potential every day.
