Profile

Founded in 1971, MacEwan University has a long tradition of learner access and quality education. Over the last 40 years, the university has evolved and grown from a community college into a degree-granting university. The university offers a broad complement of programs to a student body which numbers nearly 12,000 full-time undergraduate students, including more than 600 international students from over 50 countries.

The university offers 27 four-year baccalaureate degrees, two applied bachelor degrees (three years of instruction and one year of work experience), five university transfer programs (first and second years of bachelor’s degrees) and 48 one- and two-year career diploma and certificate programs. In addition, the university also offers preparation for university and college, English as a second language, professional and personal development courses and workshops, corporate training, and is home to the Alberta College Conservatory of Music.

MacEwan University instructors are focused on teaching first, but many are also engaged in ground breaking, internationally recognized research and scholarly and artistic activity. This research informs and enhances high quality teaching and curriculum, and by integrating their research into the classroom, faculty also create opportunities for student involvement in research – a rare opportunity in many undergraduate universities.

Students and alumni consistently say that “accessible faculty” is one of the main reasons that they are satisfied with their education at MacEwan University; instructors are easy to find, are approachable and, above all, students say that they value the one-on-one relationships they are able to have with faculty.

MacEwan University has four urban campuses in Edmonton, Alberta. Each campus is equipped with up-to-date educational facilities, science, computing and engineering labs, and a comprehensive library. By 2020, the university plans to consolidate most of its operations on an expanded City Centre Campus, including a new Centre for Arts and Culture, and dispose of the current South Campus and Centre for the Arts and Communications facilities.

The Robbins Health Learning Centre, located on City Centre Campus is home to the Clinical Simulation Centre (CSC), 25,000 square feet of authentic clinical spaces that set the stage for nursing students to practice skills and critical thinking in a realistic environment.
