Financial support

+ Scholarships

The University of Calgary offers approximately 20 scholarships, bursaries and/or awards available for Aboriginal students for entrance and/or in a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The university has just received a $750,000 endowment gift from the Rupertsland Institute to support six scholarships for Métis students: three undergraduate and three graduate.

+ Repayable Loans

The University of Calgary has two emergency loan programs:

1) Muttart Aboriginal Emergency Student Loan – this emergency loan program is managed by the Student Awards and Financial Aid Centre in consultation and through recommendation from The Native Centre;

2) Talisman Emergency Food and Supply Program – this program is managed by The Native Centre and offers emergency gift cards to use at Safeway.

+ Graduate fellowship

Additional Research Assistance funding is available through NSERC when:

1) a graduate student has self-identified as Aboriginal,

2) the Faculty applies for the additional funds that support the Aboriginal application (which is in addition to current available pool of funding).

*Faculty members need to identify students during NSERC process.

Financial guidance

- Specialized financial advising, guidance and advocacy is available through the advising services offered by The Native Centre staff on student loans, First Nations sponsorship,

- Student Award and Financial Aid Centre offers guidance with the Student Loan (Canada / Alberta), and the Muttart Emergency Student Loan.

On-campus housing/student residences
+ General counselling

The Native Centre offers student access to an Aboriginal Integrative Therapist, who is a registered MSW Social Worker for crisis intervention or holistic healing. Students who seek formal counsellng via a registered psychologist are referred to the Counselling Centre under the auspices of the University of Calgary Health and Wellness Centre.

+ Peer-to-peer mentoring

The Native Centre has just launched a new Aboriginal Student Retention and Peer Mentoring Program called ASSERT: Aboriginal Student Success, Empowerment, and Retention Track Program. This program is designed to identify and work proactively with Aboriginal students at academic risk (2.40 GPA and lower). The program includes peer support / tutoring, academic and cultural support modules, and special advising / coaching.

+ Employment/career counselling

The Native Centre manages the LYNX: Aboriginal Student Career and Employment Program, which is an online job search and student support program

Activities

+ Social or cultural events

- The Native Centre and First Nations Student Association offer social and cultural events throughout the year including: Annual Native Awareness Week, Annual Graduation Banquet and Pow Wow, Potlucks, Spiritual Ceremonies, Sage Gathering, Women’s Tea Ceremony, and Field Trips.

- The Haskayne School of Business offers a specialized Educational Enhancement Program for Aboriginal students in the Bachelor of Management Program that focuses on peer support, professional development, and a keynote speaker series.

- International Indigenous Studies Program offers Indigenous Scholars Speakers Series.

+ Gathering space

The Native Centre is located in the MacEwan Student Centre and includes a large facility that houses: staff offices, central reception, computer lab, two board rooms, student lounge, and student office space.

+ Elder visits

Elder visits – The Native Centre offers the opportunity for students to meet confidentially with a Cultural / Spiritual Advisor.

+ Linkages to local Aboriginal communities

The Native Centre Director and other staff sit on various community advisory committees and partner with both other educational and/or social services agencies in Calgary and Alberta.

+ Other

- The University of Calgary faculty have developed meaningful and productive partnerships with Aboriginal communities in a number of research projects
- The Native Centre offers a special Aboriginal Youth Outreach and Leadership Training Program called the N.A.P.I. Ambassador Program. This program is a pre-recruitment initiative that provides role models that encourage students to stay in school and offers three levels of certified leadership training specifically designed for Aboriginal youth.

Programs for Aboriginal students

Transition

Programs On Campus Off Campus
This credit-based transitional program is managed by The Native Centre, and provides the opportunity for Aboriginal students to take three to four university level credit courses per academic term with enhanced cultural and academic student support. Students are classified as Open Studies students and can take up to a maximum of 16 courses with a minimum of 2.00 / 4.00 GPA, and then, ideally, will move into a faculty-based program.
Old Sun College Academic Outreach Program
This credit-based transitional program is managed jointly by The Native Centre and Old Sun Community College, and provides the opportunity for Aboriginal students to take three to four university level credit courses per academic term within their home community. Enhanced cultural and academic student support for this program is offered by Old Sun Community College staff. Students are classified as Open Studies students and can take up to a maximum of 16 courses with a minimum of 2.00 / 4.00 GPA, and then, ideally, will move into a faculty-based program at the University of Calgary or another postsecondary institution, including a First Nations college. Old Sun Community College Outreach Program is offered on site at Old Sun Community College.

Undergraduate

Aboriginal Relations Leadership Certificate Program (non-credit)
Program designed for undergraduate students (Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal) and new alumni who may embark on career opportunities that interconnect with Aboriginal communities. The program offers a 28-hour Certificate Program that focuses on Aboriginal history, contemporary issues, education, employment, economic development, and Indigenous ways of knowing.
Bachelor of Social Work
The Faculty of Social Work offers the Bachelor of Social Work degree as a satellite program at various First Nations and mainstream colleges using an Aboriginal community inclusion model called Learning Circles. This program offers a modified "on-site" degree that incorporates cultural knowledge within a community context that is relevant to the profession and region in which students may be working. The program had been offered at partner institutions such as: Muskwachees Community College, Red Crow Community College, and Grande Prairie Regional College, etc.
Bachelor of Education
The Faculty of Education offers a modified "on-site" Bachelor of Education degree also based on models of Aboriginal Community Inclusion and Cultural Relevance. This program is offered upon request and through special agreement with First Nations Colleges, such as Old Sun Community College.

Master in Education
Distance learning program that allows Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students to continue to work full-time and pursue a graduate degree in Education.
Master in Social Work
Offered as a community based degree in partnership with First Nations Colleges, like Blue Quills First Nations College.
In early 2008, the office of the Aboriginal Health Program opened at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine. The goal of the program is to encourage awareness of First Nations, Métis and Inuit health and healing issues; recruit quality Aboriginal students; and to provide effective student support and offer professional development initiatives for those interested within the Faculty of Medicine to work with Aboriginal individuals, families and communities.
