The University of Winnipeg has created 51 internal financial awards (some of them provide multiple awards) for Aboriginal students, such as the Opportunity Fund bursaries and the Louis Riel bursaries which are targeted at Aboriginal learners and support hundreds of students every year.

Financial guidance

The university's Awards and Financial Aid Office provides workshops and is always available to sit down with students to assist them in accessing funding to attend university. The Aboriginal Student Services Centre will call band education directors and others to advocate for funding. The Associate Vice-President of Indigenous Affairs and the Director of University Advancement actively fundraise and connect Aboriginal students with funding sources.

- UW has a dedicated Aboriginal Recruitment Officer who travels to all 64 First Nations in Manitoba, and to Métis communities, as well as working with urban Aboriginals.
- The school works with 3,000 Aboriginal children and youth in a holistic way through Community Learning Programs with a goal of breaking down the barriers to postsecondary education and strengthening and supporting academic interests.
- The Indigenous Advisory Circle led by Dr. Phil Fontaine adds a level of Indigenous Governance to campus programs, services and activities.

Course that provides a way to build academic skills and experience University ("try out" university) before committing to it.
University Preparation
Transition Year Program
Offers academic writing, mentoring, tutoring, class cohorts, social activities, and other supports to build academic skills and support retention.

Additional information

- By their very nature, the transition programs listed above are taught in person. They are offered on campus and at times in First Nation and other communities. Online video on demand (VOD) delivery of other programs specific to Aboriginal peoples available. More VOD and online programs in partnership with Aboriginal peoples and communities in development for the fall of 2013.

- Professional, Applied and Continuing Education faculty offers a number of Aboriginal-specific and -focused certificate and diploma programs that bridge to degree programs through transfer credits.

-The Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre sees more than 2,000 people a month and assists Aboriginal people in the surrounding area with literacy skills, computer literacy, language and science education, as well as access to computers as another bridge to The University of Winnipeg.

A partnership between the Faculty of Education and the Seven Oaks and Winnipeg School Divisions. Through this program, Aboriginal Education Assistants are able to complete a Bachelor of Education degree while maintaining full-time employment in the school division.
