Profile

The University of Winnipeg, is an urban campus located in the heart of Winnipeg. UWinnipeg is committed to academic excellence. From its unique high school Collegiate on campus (grade 9 to 12) right through its 55+ program in the Division of Continuing Education, The University of Winnipeg promotes lifelong learning and making postsecondary education accessible to non-traditional and underrepresented populations such as rural, Aboriginal, inner-city and new Canadian students. It offers interdisciplinary undergraduate degree programs in arts -- including a bachelor of arts in human rights and global studies -- sciences, education and theology.  UWinnipeg’s Faculty of Business and Economics offers a unique program that reflects the current trends of some of the most prestigious business schools in North America. At the graduate level, there are several innovative master's degree programs including an MA in Aboriginal governance.

The university offers joint master’s programs (with the University of Manitoba) in public administration, history and religious studies; several applied programs are also offered jointly with Red River College, international development and conflict resolution studies are offered through Menno Simons College, an affiliate of UWinnipeg.

UWinnipeg’s innovative Global College is a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing pressing global issues for students as well as local, national and international communities.

UWinnipeg’s Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre bridges the digital divide and provides Aboriginal students and community members with free access to computers, Internet, Elders' circles, a homework club and other resources. The Aboriginal Student Services Centre offers culturally sensitive services to the university’s 800-plus First Nations, Métis and Inuit students.

The university is expanding its campus with the new Richardson College for the Environment and the Science Complex, a leading-edge science facility that will be a model of green building technology. It also recently started work on a new building that will house the business faculty, among others, and will be renovating space to create a new student centre. These capital projects were preceded by the opening of the McFeetors Hall/Great-West Life Student Residence, the Winnipeg Student Association day care, the CanWest Centre for Theatre and Film and a new fitness centre. The UWinnipeg renaissance is helping to revitalize and strengthen Winnipeg’s downtown community.

Academic support services
Academic advising, art gallery, bookstores, library, centre for academic writing/the learning centre (with free tutoring in writing, math, chemistry, and physics), the Bernice Blazewicz Pitcairn Learning Commons boasts the Stimpson Media Gallery (computers, television monitors, high-speed Internet access and state-of-the-art technology), on- and off-campus Internet access to all students with costs built into tuition fees and a 65-seat student computer lab.

First-year student programs
The academic writing centre/learning centre, study skills program, student orientation programs and first-year advising. Support program for students admitted conditionally.

Housing
The University of Winnipeg has developed comfortable, affordable close-to-campus student housing options in downtown Winnipeg and has opened a new student residence, McFeetors Hall/Great-West Life Student Residence on campus which provides a home for 176 students and 25 student families in townhouse style apartments. UWinnipeg offers single rooms in eight newly renovated houses, and dorm-style accommodations on all-student floors of the Lions Manor senior citizens’ housing complex. Housing options are within a ten-minute walk from campus, and offer clean and comfortable rooms, live-in resident assistants, volunteer opportunities and a chance to meet great people. Housing fees range from $1,720 to $2,220 per term (fees are subject to change); we offer a wide range of accommodations from dorm-style rooms to unfurnished and furnished bachelor suites to unfurnished one-bedroom suites. The University of Winnipeg has introduced a new concept in student dining by providing nutritious, locally-sourced and delicious food created by an award-winning executive chef.

Student assistance
Undergraduate: Undergraduate students at UWinnipeg have the unique opportunity to get involved in hands-on research with the university’s award-winning research faculty, UWinnipeg Canada Research Chairs and to work in Canada’s emerging centre of excellence for infectious disease science and research. Each year, the University of Winnipeg distributes almost $2 million in student awards to new and returning students. High school graduates with outstanding academic, leadership, extra-curricular, and athletic achievement may qualify for entrance scholarships ranging from $100 to $24,000. The University of Winnipeg guarantees scholarships to students with an entrance average of 80 percent or higher. Approximately one-half of all entrants receive an entrance scholarship. As well, bursaries are available for students with special financial needs including Aboriginal students, new Canadians, students from the North, rural students and adult learners. The innovative Opportunity Fund provides fast-track bursaries and tuition credits to students who are under-represented at the university including new Canadians, inner-city and Aboriginal youth.

University research

UWinnipeg offers undergraduate students high-quality training and the opportunity to engage in ongoing and innovative research that is not usually offered to undergraduates. Those research opportunities are expanding as UWinnipeg takes on a leadership role in environmental education with construction of the new Richardson College for the Environment. Research opportunities with a strong focus on international policies are also enhanced as we are now one of the few places in Canada offering a master's degree in Aboriginal governance and a bachelor of arts degree in human rights and global studies. The university has embarked on a major drive to extend its academic excellence by promoting graduate programs which now also include a master of science in applied computer science and society, in bioscience, technology and public policy, and a master of arts in English with a focus on cultural studies. UWinnipeg is an innovative and flexible centre for excellence in emerging and established academic fields, and most importantly, a place that puts students first. 

The university’s newly-appointed Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Science Education gives our students a unique opportunity to explore the relationship between cultural and science education in indigenous communities.

International education

UWinnipeg’s student body has over 500 international students from more than 50 countries. Many work on campus in the library, recreation and athletic services, the student records office, the bookstore, the physical plant and the Technology Solutions Centre. Others work as teaching assistants and lab demonstrators, or in the student union offices. The International Office provides advising, admissions, and other supports to international students. UWinnipeg’s English Language Program offers full-time, intensive and customized English language training. The full-time, 14-week program has two streams: the general English stream and the academic English stream. In both streams, classes are held from Monday to Friday, with a total of 25 hours of study and cultural activities each week. Classes are offered at various levels in both streams. The month-long intensive programs are for students looking for intensive language training. Classes focus on developing oral communication skills as well as grammar and vocabulary. The English language program also has the flexibility to offer customized English language training to groups of students. All programs offer homestay, volunteer opportunities and language partners to improve language skills.
