Profile
The University of Winnipeg, located in the urban heart of Winnipeg, is committed to access and excellence in arts and sciences. From its unique high school Collegiate on campus (grade 9 to 12) right through its 55+ program in the Division of Continuing Education, The University of Winnipeg believes in lifelong learning and making postsecondary education accessible to non-traditional and underrepresented populations such as rural, Aboriginal, inner-city and new Canadian students. Undergraduate degree programs are offered in arts -- including a new Bachelor of Arts in Human Rights and Global Studies -- sciences, education and theology. A new Faculty of Business and Economics was added in 2008. At the graduate level, several new master's degree programs were added that year as well, including an MA in Aboriginal Governance.
Joint master’s programs (with the University of Manitoba) are offered in public administration, history and religious studies, and several applied programs with Red River College are available. Menno Simons College, an affiliate of UWinnipeg, offers international development and conflict resolution studies.
UWinnipeg’s innovative Global College is a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing pressing global issues for students and local, national, and international communities. Leatherdale Internships are available to students studying abroad and international students wishing to pursue their studies at UWinnipeg.
UWinnipeg’s Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre bridges the digital divide and provides Aboriginal students and community members with free access to computers, internet, Elder’s circles, a homework club and other resources. The Aboriginal Student Services Centre offers culturally sensitive services to the university’s 800-plus First Nations, Métis and Inuit students.
The university is expanding its campus with the new Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex, a leading-edge science complex that will be a model of green building technology. As well, the university is currently constructing a new student residence, as well as a new building devoted to business, and its Continuing Education Division. It will be renovating space adjacent to the main campus to create a new student centre, and renovation of the Canwest Theatre and Film building and an expanded state-of-the art fitness centre are now complete. The UWinnipeg renaissance is helping to revitalize and strengthen Winnipeg’s downtown community.
The university also has an excellent reputation for cultivating writers – such as alumnus David Bergen, 2005 Giller Prize winner.

Student assistance
Undergraduate: Undergraduate students at UWinnipeg have the unique opportunity to get involved in hands-on research with the university’s award-winning research faculty, UWinnipeg Canada Research Chairs and to work in Canada’s emerging centre of excellence for infectious disease science and research. Each year, the University of Winnipeg distributes almost $2 million in student awards to new and returning students. High school graduates with outstanding academic, leadership, extra-curricular, and athletic achievement may qualify for entrance scholarships ranging from $100 to $24,000. The University of Winnipeg guarantees scholarships to students with an entrance average of 80 percent or higher. Approximately one-half of all entrants receive an entrance scholarship. As well, bursaries are available for students with special financial needs including Aboriginal students, new Canadians, students from the North, rural students and adult learners. The innovative Opportunity Fund provides fast-track bursaries and tuition credits to students who are under-represented at the university including new Canadians, inner-city and Aboriginal youth.
University research
The University of Winnipeg offers a dynamic environment for researchers and students. As a primarily undergraduate institution, with a total of nine graduate degree programs underway by September of 2008, UWinnipeg offers students high-quality training and many research opportunities. Our research focuses on a variety of issues facing the community, province, and nation. Issues such as housing policy, multicultural communities and inner-city and urban development are explored at the community level. Provincially, researchers tackle population health, sustainability, northern environmental and cultural issues, along with trans-border water issues and water quality on Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba. Nationally, UWinnipeg researchers are investigating Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, child security in sport, child and adult literacy, and the politics and history of Canada.
UWinnipeg recently announced creation of the Richardson College for the Environment, expanding its research capacity and knowledge areas. The university’s newly-appointed Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Science Education gives our students a unique opportunity to explore the relationship between cultural and science education in indigenous communities.
International education
The University of Winnipeg has exchange agreements with 16 universities in countries including Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Scotland, South Korea, Turkey, and the United States.
