Profile

The University of Windsor is a leader in progressive change, providing a purposeful and enriching education experience that engages students in various learning, research and other opportunities.

UWindsor is located near one of the main crossroads between Canada and the U.S. and faces the beautiful waterfront of the Detroit River. That location is analogous to UWindsor’s position as an internationally oriented, multi-disciplined institution that actively encourages a broad diversity of students, faculty and staff.

From that diversity, UWindsor fosters an atmosphere of close cooperation between faculty and its 16,000 full-time students, creating a unifying atmosphere of excellence across all of its faculties to encourage lifelong learning, teaching, research and discovery.

Now entering its most ambitious capital expansion since its founding in 1963, UWindsor welcomed a full medical school in 2008. As well, with $40 million from the federal government, matched by $40 million from the Ontario Government, UWindsor will build a new Centre for Engineering Innovation, a structure that will establish revolutionary design standards across Canada and beyond.

UWindsor’s roots go back to 1857 with the establishment of Assumption College, from which it has evolved into a comprehensive, mid-sized university offering a broad range of undergraduate, graduate, cooperative education and professional programs.

UWindsor is a leader in innovative partnerships with business and industry. These include the multi-million dollar University of Windsor/Chrysler Canada Ltd. Automotive Research and Development Centre, the only research facility of its kind in North America, and a unique agreement with the Ambassador Duty-Free Store, at Canada’s busiest border crossing.

New computer-based multimedia instructional technologies at Windsor are expanding access and enhancing the learning environment.

The university has a high proportion of part-time students and is committed to meeting the lifelong learning needs of today’s adults through a range of part-time programs, workshops and innovative distance delivery methods.

The university also offers bursaries (3,100 issued last year), which assist students facing financial hardship, an emergency loan fund and a need-based work study program. More than 550 students worked on campus through this program.

University research

The University of Windsor’s Strategic Research Plan identifies three themes – automotive, environmental and social justice. With this choice we have devoted space and human resources to build a critical mass of research activity that will contribute to our regional and national economic health and social welfare. Some of UWindsor’s research centres are: Automotive Research and Development Centre, Centre for Automotive Research and Education, International Truck and Engine Centre, Centre for Catalysis and Materials Research, Centre for Clean Diesel, Centre for Research in Reasoning, Argumentation and Rhetoric, and Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research. In order to encourage students to conduct research, the university offers senior research projects, summer research assistantships, assistance to faculty members in getting internal and external grants and several new attractive scholarships for graduate students. Researchers are drawn to UWindsor for its hands-on experience in solving real-world problems, easy access to faculty members and other researchers as mentors and new programs in the area of automotive engineering.

In fall 2009, the university will break ground on the $112-million Centre for Engineering Innovation (CEI), with $40 million in federal government funding, matched by the Province of Ontario. CEI will provide our students with laboratories and research facilities where emerging priorities such as environmental sustainability, alternative energy, nanostructure, lighter materials, and more efficient manufacturing systems can be addressed. The 300,000-sq.-ft. facility will focus on research and development and will include an industrial courtyard that will team the university, business and other partners in an environment to facilitate a direct connection between education, research and industrial innovation.

International education

The University of Windsor has a number of different work and study opportunities for students to gain international experience. Its student exchange program covers 53 schools in 17 countries. It recently added exchanges with schools in Australia, Chile, Jamaica and Korea. The university has joined the new Ontario Maharashtra-Goa Consortium, which will give students the opportunity to study at some of India’s top academic institutions. We are in the process of joining the Ontario Jiangsu Consortium, with similar opportunities in China.

Some of our most popular destinations include the U.K., New Zealand, Sweden and Australia.

Our Centre for Career Education office has long-standing work-term partners in Germany and Switzerland, where students can work in English. International students in co-op programs often return to their home countries for placements.

UWindsor has a higher proportion of international students than most Canadian universities; currently 10 percent of our student body is in this category. Our Windsor International Student Employment program facilitates on-campus employment for this group. Support for off-campus employment searches is available for all students through the Centre for Career Education.
