The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is dynamic in spirit and practice, uniquely combining academic knowledge, research opportunities, high-tech learning tools and a vibrant student life. In fact, UOIT has received accolades from students and employers alike for providing a leading-edge education that prepares its graduates for leadership roles in the knowledge-based economy.
Since opening its doors in 2003, UOIT has quickly grown to more than 6,200 students studying in career-focused undergraduate and graduate programs –- many of them unique in Ontario and Canada -– through its faculties of business and information technology; criminology, justice and policy studies; education; energy systems and nuclear science; engineering and applied science; health sciences; and science.
UOIT’s commitment to research excellence means students – even at the undergraduate level – have the opportunity to pursue innovative research projects with an aim to achieving the important changes that will significantly improve Canada’s quality of life and competitive advantage. In addition, the university has been awarded several Canada Research Chairs and industrial chairs.
The university’s technology-rich learning environment includes laptop computers loaded with program- and industry-specific software for all students. One of the greatest advantages to its national award-winning Mobile Learning program is that all students have equal access to the same technology, resources and services.
The university’s award-winning campus features state-of-the-art lecture theatres, classrooms, labs, academic offices and a spectacular library, along with a newly expanded Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre that offers a health centre with on-site doctors, nurses, counselling and other health services. In 2010, the university will open ACE-Global, a world-class automotive research and development centre that includes a climatic wind tunnel, followed in 2011 by the opening of a new 9,290-square-metre Energy Systems and Nuclear Science Research Centre.
Located at the east end of the Greater Toronto Area, UOIT is only a few minutes’ drive to shopping, dining, museums, entertainment and sporting activities and less than an hour’s drive to the heart of Toronto, Canada’s most diverse and largest city.

Student facilities and services
Personal support services
UOIT supports student success in all its facets – intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically.
Services include: financial aid and awards and financial counselling, services for students with disabilities, athletics, intercollegiate athletic academic success program, ice centre, tennis centre, athletic centre, academic and personal counselling, health centre, parking, daycare, residence and off-campus housing, student rights and responsibilities office, campus security, and transit with connections to municipal buses and regional commuter trains.
Academic support services
Students are supported by the latest information and communications technology. Every undergraduate student uses a laptop to access their lecture notes, online assignments, lab submissions, presentations and research, and use an online course management system to organize their studies and to coordinate their course-related online services. Students are provided communication tools to engage in group discussion and to contact professors and peers. They can access live or archived on demand digital lectures by a growing number of faculty.
UOIT has received national recognition for its application of information technology and has also been recognized nationally as the most wired university campus in Canada.
Other academic supports include: a learner support centre including writing centre, mature student, first-generation and ESL supports, peer writing services, academic residence leader program, hired career services to assist students and graduates with their job search and career development needs.
First-year student programs
UOIT is committed to supporting first-year students by offering a comprehensive list of services through the student life office. Students begin the year with an orientation week that offers social and academic programming to help students adjust to their new environment. The first-year website provides students and their families with information and online services that will assist students with the transition to university life. To encourage student engagement in campus activities, UOIT has incorporated a co-curricular recognition program which produces co-curricular records for students and manages the student leadership awards program.
Housing
On-campus: First-year students are guaranteed a residence room. Applications are sent with the offer of admission. Rooms and suites in our residences offer amenities and accommodation for over 1,800 students, and have been designed to foster a sense of community – a place for living and learning.
Simcoe Village offers two styles of suites: furnished double-room suite, semi-divided for privacy, including a three-piece bathroom with tub or shower and kitchenette; and furnished suite featuring two private bedrooms, kitchenette and three-piece bathroom.
South Village Residence offers furnished suites with two private bedrooms, kitchenette and three-piece bathroom. The South Village features a modern dining hall. Students in South Village are required to purchase a campus dining plan.
Every suite has cable television, Internet, work area, telephone and light housekeeping services. UOIT residences offer controlled access, on-site management, security, lounges, study rooms, tutorial space, laundry, individual air conditioning/heating and social areas.

Student assistance
UOIT offers a range of scholarships, bursaries and other financial aid to recognize academic achievement and support student success. Scholarships are awarded to students who have achieved academic and personal excellence. Bursaries are awarded to students based on their financial need. The university also offers a wide range of on-campus work/study opportunities.
Undergraduate: Entrance scholarships (no application):
a number of automatic entrance scholarships are awarded
to high achieving students.
Tuition credit awards of recognition (no application): awarded to full-time students who have met minimum entering grade averages.
Entrance scholarships (application required): Chancellor’s scholarship: one- $28,000; President’s scholarships: two- $24,000 each; Founder’s scholarships: two- $20,000 each; Naheed Dosani Entrance Scholarship: one- $1,000.
Graduate: Students applying to UOIT’s graduate programs can apply for various forms of funding. Canadian students are strongly encouraged to apply to provincial
and federal granting agencies for graduate scholarships. Foreign students are encouraged to apply to granting agencies in their own country.
The primary sources of funding for graduate students at UOIT will be graduate teaching assistantships or research assistantships and research awards. Normally, funding will not be provided to part-time students.
International: Global Leadership Award for International Students (application required): one of UOIT’s most prestigious awards (valued at over $11,000 per year), open to applicants studying at a high school
outside Canada. Recipients are academically outstanding and have made notable contribution to extracurricular or community activities.
University research
UOIT is a research-intensive university committed to conducting interdisciplinary research by addressing significant social, environmental, health and economic challenges. All tenure-track faculty members have established a strong reputation for pursuing high-quality, rigorous research programs designed to meet the research and development needs of industry and the community in the GTA and Northumberland regions, and Canada and the world. UOIT has attracted significant research funding in its short history with total research dollars to date exceeding $26 million.
UOIT’s success has been achieved by targeting strategic research areas – community and social wellness; sustainable energy; applied bioscience; automotive, materials and manufacturing; and information and communications. UOIT’s research and academic excellence has been recognized with two Tier 1 Canada Research Chairs in aquatic toxicology and advanced energy systems, and three Tier 2 Chairs in health informatics, decomposition chemistry, and robotics and automation. In addition, UOIT has attracted several industrial chairs in innovative design engineering, nuclear fuels and health physics and environmental safety. UOIT is home to the Automotive Centre of Excellence, a recognized hub for automotive-related research.
International education
UOIT’s 2009 - 2010 international student enrolment is approximately 280 students, which represents almost five percent of UOIT’s full-time student population. International students come to UOIT from more than 55 countries. They have been drawn by UOIT’s real-world mix of the theoretical and the practical, and its safe, friendly environment.
Several study abroad opportunities are available. Germany: UOIT has joined a consortium of Ontario universities that belong to the Ontario Baden-Württemberg Exchange program, which includes nine German universities. UOIT also has two other exchange programs in Germany – an undergraduate exchange program with Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences and one for undergraduate students majoring in physics with the University of Leipzig. France: UOIT participates in the Ontario Rhône-Alpes Exchange program, which includes 14 French universities. India: UOIT participates in the Ontario Maharashtra-Goa Exchange program, which includes nine Indian universities. Sweden: UOIT has an undergraduate exchange program with Linkoping University in Linkoping, Sweden. Turkey: UOIT has two undergraduate exchange programs in Turkey – one with Bahcesehir University and the other with Yeditepe University, both in Istanbul.
