Profile

Trinity Western University (TWU) is a faith-based institution -- one inspired by Christ’s life and guided by his teachings. The result is a university that emphasizes excellence in academic scholarship, while always keeping in mind how the knowledge and understanding we gain through study can serve the world's deepest needs.

Located in British Columbia’s beautiful Fraser Valley, just 45 minutes from downtown Vancouver, Trinity Western University is a Christian liberal arts and sciences institution offering 54 undergraduate degrees and 18 graduate degrees including business administration, nursing, theology, leadership and counselling psychology. In addition, TWU now offers adult degree completion for working adults. A commitment to developing the whole student – academically, socially, physically and spiritually – distinguishes TWU as an institute for leadership development.

Taught by some of North America’s finest scholars who have thoroughly integrated their studies with their faith, Trinity Western students acquire the thinking skills, expertise, professional abilities and character qualities essential for today’s marketplace. Small class sizes and personable professors ensure lasting relationships that enrich the education experience.

Research institutes include the Dead Sea Scrolls Institute, the Septuagint Institute and the Gender Studies Institute. TWU also offers cooperative education and continuing education programs, online learning and leadership development programs.

In addition to its Langley campus, TWU boasts the Laurentian Leadership Centre in Ottawa (Ontario), TWU Bellingham campus in Bellingham (Washington), and the Crows Nest Ecological Research Centre on Salt Spring Island (British Columbia).

New students are introduced to a connections group with other first-year students that is led by an upper-class student. These groups provide mentorship and friendship and will also serve as the discussions group for TWU’s University 101 class, which is designed to help students make the transition from high school to university.

TWU also offers specific programs and services for transfer students and mature students designed to meet their specific needs.

University research

TWU researchers conduct research on a range of social and health issues of concern to Canadians. TWU professors hold three Canada Research Chairs that illustrate the unique areas of expertise found at TWU. The Chair in Developmental Genetics and Disease is part of a growing program in biotechnology, focusing on areas such as cancer research and neurodegenerative disorders by studying cell signaling pathways. The Chair in Dead Sea Scrolls Studies highlights the world-class scholarly work being done in the areas of religion and Biblical studies. The Chair in Religion, Culture and Interpretation demonstrates the interdisciplinary approach of Trinity Western University, combining philosophy, theology and literature to investigate the impact of religion on cultural ethics.

To complement this research, a five-year initiative focusing on religion and conflict in society is being undertaken with funding from Rogers/Omni involving a series of conferences and symposia.

TWU also incorporates the following research institutes and centres: the Dead Sea Scrolls Institute, Religion in Canada Institute, Septuagint Institute, Gender Studies Institute, Centre for Ministry Excellence, Centre for Entrepreneurial Leaders and Smarter Families Canada.

International education

TWU provides global learning opportunities that encompass two distinct activities. First, TWU provides academic experiences, language and cultural training programs for international students choosing to study in Canada. International student programming engages international students in traditional academic degree programs as well as in unique international programs and specialized certificates. Second, TWU engages traditional TWU students in the development of global awareness and citizenship through various study and travel abroad programs, exchange programs, and through intentional interactions with international learners on our campus.

TWU's international student programming includes language and cultural support for international learners with the goal of enhancing their academic core competencies and promoting their academic success in pursuit of a university degree. TWU's partnership with English as a Second Language International provides English language training and bridge and transitions programs for both undergraduate and graduate level students whose first language is not English. Additional programs include inter-institution international agreements and visiting scholar’s programs.
