Trent’s Peterborough campus boasts award-winning architecture in a breathtaking natural setting on the banks of the Otonabee River, just 90 minutes from downtown Toronto. Together with its satellite campus in Oshawa, Trent draws excellent students from throughout the country and around the world.

On campus and around the globe, Trent’s researchers are involved in studies of global significance. Trent’s Worsfold Water Quality Centre houses the world’s leading state-of-the-art instrumentation and is at the core of the new Chemical Sciences Building, while the university’s new DNA Building has put the university at the centre of a regional life sciences economic cluster. Trent’s First Peoples House of Learning is a tangible representation of the university’s leading role in establishing North America’s first Indigenous studies programs.

Trent’s key areas of research priority include biological and forensic sciences, Canadian and Indigenous studies, cultural studies and the humanities, education, health and sustainability, environmental science, materials science and quantitative modelling, and understanding people, communities and institutions. Trent is home to 10 Canada Research Chairs.

Student facilities and services

Personal support services
Student Affairs is the umbrella office for service and supports offered to students by various departments. We also provide direct programming and services including impact leadership program, introductory seminar week, facilitating the transportation committee for input on bus service to Trent and overseeing a series of student committees that examine fees, policies, and student concerns. Personal support services include: athletics, bookstore, bus service, careers centre, child care centre, counselling centre, food-snack bars, student health services, walk home program, spiritual affairs, housing services.

First-year student programs
New student orientation and advising program, held throughout the summer, and introductory seminar week: a four-day fall orientation session, prior to the first week of classes.

Housing
On-campus: Trent can accommodate approximately 1,050 students in residence. The university has four residential colleges offering varying styles of co-ed and female only living. Most residence space is single student rooms, but double rooms are available. A meal plan is mandatory for all in residence and a variety of plans are offered to meet the student’s needs. Residence is guaranteed to all incoming first-year students who apply by the deadline. Otherwise, rooms are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Annual cost of residence depends on the college and meal plan selected. Single rooms with a meal plan range from $8,335 - $10,344 and double rooms with a meal plan range from $7,366 - $7,976. We are able to house students who wish to remain in residence after their first year. Space is limited due to our commitment to housing most of the first-year students. We encourage you to consider living in one of the themed Living Learning Communities. Off-campus: Housing is readily available downtown, within walking distance of Traill College and bus routes to the Symons campus. Average prices: room with kitchen privileges, $300 - $400/month; bachelor, $350 - $425/month; one-bedroom apartment, $475 - $750/ month, two-bedroom apartment, $700 - $950/month, three-bedroom+ apartment, $800+/month. Student assistance
Undergraduate: Trent University offers both entrance and in-course scholarships and bursaries. Bursary funds are awarded based on financial need and satisfactory academic achievement. Applications for entrance and in-course bursaries are available on the Trent University Financial Aid website. In addition, the Ontario work-study program and short-term loans are available to students in need. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit. The university offers both entrance and in-course scholarships. All new students are automatically considered for entrance scholarships. Most scholarships do not require a separate application, with the exception of the Champlain, Board of Governors Leadership and Trent University Special Admission Scholarships.

Graduate: Trent University offers a variety of graduate scholarships, merit awards, and tuition bursaries. New graduate students admitted to the university are automatically considered for graduate teaching assistantships ($8,698), research fellowships, entrance awards and PhD scholarships. In addition, the university has a number of endowed graduate scholarships and bursaries, which range from $500 to $10,000 a year. A limited number of international student differential fee waivers are available for visa students.

University research

Trent University is internationally recognized for its research in environmental and life science, with special strengths in studies of environmental change and monitoring, conservation biology, and water quality. Trent has also developed a tradition of interdisciplinary research that focuses on understanding various past and contemporary societies, as well as understanding the relationship between the products of a culture and the social, political, and subjective contexts in which they take shape.

Trent has above-average research productivity and has seen the proliferation of various research centers. The following research centres have either been created or expanded in the past five years: Archaeological Research Centre, Canadian Environmental Modelling Centre, Centre for Health Studies, Centre for Materials Research, Centre for the Study of Theory, Culture and Politics, Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Native Studies, Institute for Watershed Science Centre, James McLean Oliver Ecological Centre, Trent International Political Economy Centre, Worsfold Water Quality Centre. 

International education

Trent students are encouraged to spend a summer, term or full academic year of their undergraduate degree studying in another country. The Trent International Study and Exchange Program provides opportunities in many countries, including England, Scotland, Wales, Finland, Iceland, Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, Botswana, Poland, Norway, Malta, Spain, France, Germany, Hungary, South Africa, Mauritius, the Czech Republic, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Sweden, Australia, the United States and Mexico. Other Year Abroad Programs sponsored by academic departments include the Trent-in-Ghana and Trent-in-Ecuador International Development Studies Programs. Students may also coordinate, with TIP’s assistance, their own study-abroad program or may participate in summer service-learning placements in Africa through the World University Service of Canada.
