Profile

Founded in 1852 by the Basilian Fathers, St. Michael’s College is the Catholic college in the University of Toronto. As such, it offers students an academic home in a college which has inherited intellectual traditions springing from medieval Europe, combined with full membership in one of Canada’s greatest modern research universities.

Set in its own green space on the St. George (downtown) campus of the University of Toronto, the college is in the heart of the city.

St. Michael’s provides a superior undergraduate education in arts and science which prepares students for full citizenship in an increasingly complex and interdependent world. This mission is undertaken within a milieu in which the Christian faith, in the Catholic tradition, is openly professed and its intellectual heritage explored and developed. At the same time, the college welcomes men and women of every background who wish to become members of its academic community. The university has a graduate Faculty of Theology, in addition to a continuing education division offering general-interest courses and various certificate programs. St. Michael's is affiliated with the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies and with the Canadian Catholic Bioethics Centre, both of which are located on the St. Michael's campus.

University research

Research undertaken at St. Michael’s contributes to the broader effort of research in the humanities in the Faculty of Arts and Science of the University of Toronto. Research at St. Michael’s also contributes to the cause of greater ecumenical and interfaith understanding and cooperation, and to the particular concerns and aspirations of the Catholic community in Toronto and across the country and beyond, especially through members of the undergraduate program in Christianity and Culture and the graduate Faculty of Theology. For example, the recently established Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute, an affiliated institute of St. Michael’s, exists to provide scholarly information and research for the wider community on contemporary issues of common concern, and the Three Faiths Forum is intended to foster dialogue among Christians, Jews and Muslims.

St. Michael’s library, the John M. Kelly Library, has been in the forefront of the University of Toronto’s leading contribution to the Open Content Alliance and the digitization and dissemination of library holdings. The library has also recently acquired major special collections in the works of spiritual author Henri Nouwen and theologian John Henry Newman, among others.

International education

International educational experiences for undergraduates include the Intercordia program, a service-learning summer course in social justice and international development, and a summer study abroad program in Celtic studies. Graduate students in the Faculty of Theology may participate in the Israel Intersession Program of credit courses taken in Jerusalem, as part of the faculty’s master of arts in theology and Jewish studies, and in the Latin American Globalization Program, a three-week session in Lima, Peru. On the local level, several programs in the Faculty of Theology include a field-placement component.
