Profile

Simon Fraser University began opening minds to a fresh new approach to higher learning over 40 years ago.

An exciting mission to innovate, embrace bold initiative and reach out to the global community has made SFU today one of Canada’s most distinctive and respected universities and a leading research institution.

Some of the brightest minds are here – internationally celebrated researchers, inspiring educators and accomplished students. In all, SFU is a community of more than 20,000 students, over 900 faculty and over 100,000 alumni worldwide. In more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs within eight faculties across three vibrant Greater Vancouver campuses, SFU consistently pushes the boundaries of academic innovation.

SFU is best known for its ground-breaking interdisciplinary approach and legendary cooperative education program. In recent years, the university has been offering students a wealth of opportunities for enriching work, study and dialogue experiences beyond the campus and around the world.

SFU scholars and graduates are tackling and solving some of today’s most pressing issues, bringing innovation – and often new hope – to communities at home and abroad.

Educational cross-pollination for undergraduates is already well-established at SFU, with nearly 50 joint major programs.

But that’s just the beginning. The options for combining programs are vast, and SFU is continually adding new possibilities and setting new standards of excellence to develop well-rounded graduates. For example, our recently adopted new curriculum requirements for undergraduates emphasize breadth of study, and writing and quantitative skills.

An extraordinary range of choice in studies, combined with SFU’s flexible full-year trimester system and cooperative education experiences, ensure that you are fully empowered to chart your own singular path to learning.

Student assistance
Undergraduate: Simon Fraser University awards more than 1,900 entrance scholarships alongside many other awards and bursaries. As a participant in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the university offers athletic scholarships to student athletes.

Graduate: Five main forms of financial support available to graduate students from internal sources: scholarships and fellowships (merit-based awards), bursaries (need-based awards), loans (need-based awards which may be supplemented by a workstudy program), teaching assistantships and sessional instructorships, and research assistantships. Detailed listings of merit-based awards are in the SFU graduate awards guide, which is available through: www.sfu.ca/dean-gradstudies/current/.

University research

In just 40 years, Simon Fraser University has gained an international reputation for its strengths in the liberal arts and sciences, as well as for its innovative interdisciplinary and professional programs. The advancement of excellence in research is now a defining feature of SFU, with leading individuals and well-recognized groups engaged in a wide variety of key research activities that transcend traditional boundaries of knowledge. With more than $75 million in research funding, SFU’s goal is to be the most research-intensive comprehensive university in Canada. Our faculty and students are building research capacity in five strategic areas: (1) communication, computation and technology; (2) culture, society and human behaviour; (3) economic organization, public policy and the global community; (4) environment; and (5) health. Our 2006 success rate of 84 percent in the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Discovery Grants competition is among the highest in the country. Our success rate of 52 percent in the competition for Standard Research Grants awarded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council is well above the national average of 33 percent, and the highest of the major universities in British Columbia.

International education

Exchange programs for undergraduate and graduate students in 45 countries, as well as group study programs and roughly 20 field schools per year, span the globe and include agreements with institutions in Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Americas.

International co-op is an opportunity for students to experience the world while working in their field of study. Recent international work placements have ranged from small local to large multinational organizations in both private and public sectors.

For example, students have worked for the United Nations in Bangkok, Thailand, to increase HIV resistance and awareness; conducted market research in Hong Kong and China on people’s sushi eating preferences; studied decompression sickness in scuba divers in the Cayman Islands; and helped develop telecommunications in Kyoto, Japan (www.sfu.ca/coop/).
