Profile

The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) offers competitive, high-quality programming in an engaging, community-oriented environment. It is the only university in Canada to house five health science colleges and a major teaching hospital on the same campus. The university is situated in the city of Saskatoon, which has a population of just under 220,000. The welcoming feeling embodied throughout the city extends to campus where the U of S spirit is flourishing as the university, now in its second century, continues to grow.

The U of S awards 58 degrees in over 100 areas of specialization and is uniquely positioned in the fields of human, animal and plant sciences. The U of S has also implemented innovative Aboriginal programs in law, business, education, humanities and the sciences.

Work is underway on the new Academic Health Sciences Centre, which will house the colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nutrition, and Nursing under one roof to increase interdisciplinary cooperation. The Edwards School of Business has added a downtown campus to bring programming to students in the heart of Saskatoon’s business district.

Innovation at the University of Saskatchewan is showcased by unparalleled research facilities such as the Canadian Light Source (CLS), the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) and Innovation Place, one of the most successful research parks in North America.

While education and innovation are vital to the university, the extra-curricular activities are equally important. Huskie athletic teams participate in inter-university competition in a number of sports. Over 70 campus clubs cover interests from kayaking to religion. A student newspaper, The Sheaf, provides a medium for future journalists, editors, cartoonists and photographers. A number of choruses, theatre productions and ensembles provide opportunities for performers and enthusiasts alike.

The U of S is dedicated to providing a complete student experience with access to all the necessary tools for student success.

University research

Research and innovation at the University of Saskatchewan are showcased by the Canadian Light Source (CLS), the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) and Innovation Place, one of the most successful research parks in North America. The International Vaccine Centre (InterVac) will soon be complete. The CLS, Canada’s only synchrotron and the only one in the world located on a university campus, allows researchers to view matter at a subatomic level. VIDO is a world leader in the formulation and delivery of vaccines. Once complete, InterVac will be one of the largest Containment Level 3 (CL3) vaccine research and development facilities in North America, studying CL3 diseases such as SARS, HIV, tuberculosis and hepatitis C.

Research and engaged scholarship at the U of S plays a crucial role in creating knowledge and then transferring that knowledge to society. This is accomplished both through an enriched teaching and learning environment for students and through technologies developed by researchers.

International education

The University of Saskatchewan has a growing number of study abroad opportunities for students in over 25 countries, including China, Czech Republic, India, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Uganda, England and many more. Numerous opportunities for internship and practicum placements exist for students in programs such as nursing, education and engineering.
