Telephone: 416-979-5000

President: Mr. Sheldon Levy

Profile

Ryerson is a Canadian leader in innovative, career-focused education and a university clearly on the move. A distinctly urban university with a mission to serve societal need, it has a long-standing commitment to engaging its community. A combination of theory and professional learning provides graduate and undergraduate education that distinguishes Ryerson from other universities. That difference is reflected in the program mix and the continual reinforcement of classroom lectures through formal contact with business and industry, laboratory work, field trips, outside projects and work experience in the professional community.

Graduate studies at Ryerson have grown to host 2,000 master’s and doctoral students in dozens of programs. The university is also experiencing significant growth in its research activity.

Ryerson offers close to 100 undergraduate, master’s and PhD programs in five faculties and the School of Graduate Studies. The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education is Canada’s largest, with 65,000 registrations annually.

Ryerson is helping to reshape downtown Toronto with two new buildings: a gallery and research centre in the heart of campus, and a student learning centre on the city’s main street.

University research

Ryerson is experiencing rapid growth in basic and applied research across a wide variety of disciplines. In the past decade, funded research activity at the university has increased fivefold. The university also enjoys a reputation for collaboration with community and industrial partners in the pursuit of its research objectives. Investigators shape research questions around real-world problems, often working together across disciplinary boundaries to find innovative solutions.

Areas of research focus include: digital media, communication and information technology; energy, sustainability and the environment; health and well being; cultural prosperity; technological innovation; and learning and teaching effectiveness.

Research highlights:

  • Research in a variety of disciplines supports Canada’s only graduate program in immigration and settlement;
  • The Centre for the Study of Commercial Activity conducts research in business geomatics with the sponsorship of 70 commercial partners;
  • The fusion of cross-disciplinary researchers in engineering and the humanities with artists and media professionals;
  • The Department of Physics is home to a cluster of medical physicists with expertise in trace elements in human bone, novel uses of ultrasound, novel methods of disease detection and cancer management, computational modeling of human anatomical structures and radiation treatment of tumours.

The Ryerson Institute for Aerospace Design and Innovation provides undergraduate students with industry-sponsored research and design opportunities.

International education

A growing number of Ryerson students are involved in a broad range of international initiatives, including exchanges, internships and placements. Recently, 60 students benefited from a special Summer Experience Fund aimed at encouraging students’ involvement in international development projects. Students traveled as groups or individuals to Cambodia, Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya and Israel, among other countries, to take part in placements, internships and research projects.

The university has active and formal exchange agreements with institutions in 15 countries: the U.K., France, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, China, Mexico and the U.S. and is a member of the Ontario-Rhône-Alpes and Ontario-Baden-Württemberg programs. Ryerson is also a participant in two mobility projects: the CESAer Canada-EU Student Exchange Program in Aerospace Engineering for graduate students and the NEXOPOLIS North American Mobility Project for students in Urban and Regional Planning.

For those students who want to attend a university that does not have an official exchange with Ryerson, the study abroad program permits students to attend almost any university, with certain conditions.

International students at Ryerson who wish to work on campus will receive assistance in locating positions through the Office of International Services for Students.
