Profile

Several important things distinguish Royal Roads University from other Canadian institutions. First, its mandate is to deliver applied and professional programs designed specifically for experienced professionals. Secondly, its educational philosophy supports active, collaborative learning, consistently earning it a first-place ranking in the National Survey of Student Engagement. Thirdly, Royal Roads University has a distinguished history as the private estate of former premier and lieutenant governor of B.C. James Dunsmuir and then as a military officers’ training college until 1995. Finally, Royal Roads University is the future home of the Robert Bateman Centre, envisioned as an internationally regarded education centre for sustainability with a wide range of accessible and relevant programming.

With a mandate to provide continuous learning opportunities for people in the workplace, RRU focuses on developing professionals who can prosper and contribute meaningfully in a complex, dynamic world. The university offers undergraduate completion programs equivalent to years three and four, degrees at the master’s level and an interdisciplinary PhD in social sciences. Master’s degrees at Royal Roads are completed in approximately two years while undergraduate programs many be completed through an accelerated 12-month, on-campus program or a two-year program. Royal Roads also offers a broad selection of custom and executive development programs.

Most programs at RRU are offered through a combination of online learning at a distance and short on-campus residencies. This provides the balance students need to meet family and work requirements while fostering collaborative, progressive and shared learning both on- and off-campus. In addition to campus-based and distance programs, Royal Roads University delivers programs internationally, providing access to top quality Canadian education abroad.

The Royal Roads University campus is located on a magnificent 227-hectare oceanfront setting 20 minutes from downtown Victoria, British Columbia. The campus buildings reflect Royal Roads’ past, first as a private estate and then as a military officers’ training college until 1995. Among them is the distinctive 100-year-old Hatley Castle, a heritage building surrounded by expansive gardens with spectacular views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Campus facilities include administrative buildings, student residences, a recreation centre, food services and ample parking.

University research

RRU’s research activity emphasizes the synergy between the university’s applied research model and its applied and professional degree programs. The applied research model has been designed to complement the professional outcomes-based educational model and to advance the university’s mandate to respond to labour market needs of British Columbia, Canada and the world.

The university's strategic research themes reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the academic programs. These themes are learning and innovation, and sustainable communities and societies. The research realm, ranging from peer-reviewed research to consulting, establishes and enhances the critical link between the research endeavour and the learning provided to students. Equally as important is that research becomes an activity that can satisfy key stakeholders – students, policymakers and the broader public.
