Profile

The past decade has seen unprecedented growth at the University of Regina, with the physical capacity of the campus more than doubling over that time. This growth is a reflection of the university’s development into one of Canada’s leading comprehensive universities – a dynamic institution with a strong national and international reputation for teaching and research.

With roots going back to 1911, the University of Regina has grown in response to the needs of the province of Saskatchewan. The university’s nine academic faculties and 25 departments provide a comprehensive set of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs, preparing students to excel in diverse disciplines at the local, national and international levels.

Specialized programs have long been offered in a number of areas, including journalism, education, social work and business administration. A cooperative education program – the first in Western Canada – is also available in arts, business administration, engineering and science.

In recent years, the university has developed many innovative program offerings. For example, the university is home to the first bachelor of police studies program to be offered in Canada as well as Western Canada’s first bachelor of health studies program.

The University of Regina has launched a unique program – a first in Canada – guaranteeing students a successful career launch following completion of their undergraduate degree. Students who complete the UR Guarantee program but cannot find meaningful employment within six months following graduation may take up to 30 undergraduate credit hours during the following year, and the cost of tuition will be covered.

Under the UR Guarantee program, students will take advantage of academic success, campus engagement, service leadership and career counselling opportunities to prepare them for the job market in their chosen field. The aim is to provide students with hands-on experience that will complement their formal education and enable them to increase their employability. The program is set to be launched in the fall of 2010. All 2009 undergraduate students with 30 or fewer credit hours are eligible for the UR Guarantee program.

Educational opportunities are enhanced by more than 60 research laboratories, centres and institutes, and collaboration with industry partners at the adjacent Innovation Place Regina. The campus also includes three federated colleges – Campion College, Luther College and First Nations University of Canada – that further diversify students’ educational experience.

The university is located in the heart of Regina’s Wascana Centre, the largest urban park in North America. This picturesque location offers an attractive work and study environment for more than 11,900 full- and part-time students, 1,540 faculty and staff, and approximately 750 casual employees.

Over the past 25 years, the University of Regina has developed into an international university, signing partnership agreements with more than 90 institutions in 28 different countries. This focus on internationalization has helped attract students and faculty from around the world, bringing global perspectives to a university that had its beginnings with only 27 students nearly a century ago, and now has over 54,000 alumni worldwide.

University research

Our world-class scholars significantly advance five thematic areas – culture/heritage, energy/environment, health, informatics and social justice. We conduct leading-edge research in carbon capture and storage, green energy technologies, cancer research, data mining, climate change adaptation, pain and aging, and other areas of traditional strength. Internationally-renowned innovative research is centred in more than 60 research laboratories, centres and institutes and 10 Canada Research Chairs.

Since 2000, our external research funding has doubled ($23 million); our graduate enrolment has increased to more than 1,400 students (18 percent of whom are international). Our strong industry and government partnerships, including Innovation Place Regina, advance applied research to help foster technology transfer and commercialization.

Our campus features some of the most advanced research and teaching facilities in Canada with new state-of-the-art buildings (Research and Innovation Centre and the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport) attracting leading scholars from around the globe.

International education

The University of Regina hosts more than 800 international students from more than 95 countries. Both undergraduate and graduate international students are represented, and are welcomed by all faculties. Additionally, the English as a Second Language Centre, through the Centre for Continuing Education, offers formal language instruction as well as specialized short-term programs to hundreds of students throughout the year.

Canadian students wanting to participate in formal exchange programs have a choice of four different exchange programs. Students participating in the National Student Exchange (NSE) program have the opportunity to live and learn in a different geographic region within the United States and Canada. NSE provides a list of more than 175 colleges and universities to choose from and places approximately 97 percent of applicants. Through the Consortium for North American Higher Education Collaboration’s Student Exchange Program, students are eligible to study at universities in North America, including Mexico. The student exchange program allows students to participate in exchanges world-wide as long as these universities have individual agreements with the University of Regina. The university also participates in the north2north program organized by the University of the Arctic, an international network of educational institutions in circumpolar countries.
