Profile

Redeemer University College is a non-denominational undergraduate university known for the academic excellence of its liberal arts and science program and the scholarship of its faculty. Committed to providing university education with a Christian perspective, academic integrity, and offered within the context of a caring campus community, Redeemer features a close learning relationship between faculty and students strengthened by small classes and common objectives. Townhouse and apartment-style residences also promote a sense of community and a supportive environment which encourages learning.

Redeemer’s focus on liberal arts and science enables all students – regardless of their major – to receive a broad, comprehensive education which provides a solid basis for graduate study or employment. Studies are complemented by co-curricular activities, including music, theatre, athletics, chapel and community service, which contribute to the development of the whole person, intellectually, socially, spiritually and culturally. Graduates are well prepared for the challenges of study, employment and life after completing their degrees.

Through the work of its faculty and research centres, cultural events, the community service of staff and students, and the performance of its alumni, Redeemer University College endeavours to make a constructive contribution to Canadian higher education and society as it serves its students and the surrounding community.

Student facilities and services

Personal support services
The student life department at Redeemer offers professional personal counselling services for all students at little or no cost to the student. Students also have access to the career resource centre and placement offices, chaplain, and to support services for students with physical or learning disabilities.

Redeemer's unique and close-knit residential communities, along side lit walkways, campus security staff and a walksafe program, ensure a safe campus. Campus features for students, staff and faculty include an on-campus child care centre, health services and on-campus doctor, and fitness centre with weight room and squash courts.

Academic support services
With a professionally staffed writing centre to ensure good writing skills and study smart seminars at the beginning of each semester, Redeemer helps students get their 'feet off the ground' academically, so to speak. All students have faculty and academic advisors, and are encouraged to participate in on-campus clubs and peer support groups. Learning communities provide students with the opportunity to develop academic community, vocational interests, scholarship and leadership skills. Tutors, note takers and other similar services are available at no cost through the Student Life office. Experiential learning opportunities are available through internships, co-op placements, mission trips and international studies.

First-year student programs
Incoming students are offered many opportunities to be oriented to life on campus through advising sessions with faculty members, study smart seminars, prayer groups, writing labs, library tours and commuter club meetings.

Housing
On-campus: About 415 students live on campus in cozy, townhouse-style residences and in one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Apartments are reserved for married and senior students. Students living in the townhouse-style residences live in groups of six to eight. All first- and second-year students under the age of 20 are required to live on campus and guaranteed a spot in university residences (no co-ed dorms offered), which are supervised by student residents and housing assistants (you must apply by the deadline). Approximately 87 percent of first-year students live in residence. Annual cost of room and board: $5,810. Meal plan is mandatory when living on campus and the newly renovated “market” grocery store right on campus, gives students control over their diet.

Off-campus: The campus is located in beautiful Ancaster, a quick ten-minute drive from Hamilton. Redeemer is on the Hamilton City Bus line. Housing is readily available and reasonably accessible. Prices range from $500 - $900/month. For more information, contact the Student Life office, which keeps an up-to-date listing of local housing opportunities.

As well, Redeemer offers a number of leadership and academic achievement scholarships that are both grades- and interview-based. There are a number of scholarship and bursary opportunities for incoming students. University research

Research by faculty at Redeemer University College addresses several areas of concern on a local and national scale. Faculty are involved in projects of science education at the elementary school level, community fitness, person-centred care of dementia patients, the educational philosophy of Charlotte Mason, violence against women, normalization of emotions in adolescents, robotic vision, uptake of heavy metals by food plants and the future of Canadian cities. The Office of Research and Faculty Development has expanded its services in identifying funding sources and grant support and has redesigned its website to support faculty research. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Undergraduate Student Research Awards and the Human Resources Canada Summer Career Placement program have supported summer student research in the social and natural sciences. As an undergraduate institution, teaching excellence remains a primary aim of Redeemer University College. However, it is expected of faculty to devote approximately 25 percent of their time to research activities.

International education

Redeemer offers co-op programs in business, computer science, science and theatre arts which are supported by a co-op and career placement director. International students have successfully participated in this program and often find meaningful work-study placements on campus. Co-op programs often lead to full-time employment following graduation and give graduates a leading edge in establishing a career.

Students regularly participate in off-campus study programs in England, France and the Netherlands, with opportunities in China, Central America, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and Russia. Students find that these programs develop better understanding of other cultures, languages and people. It places the academic program in a larger global context and develops better understanding of Canada’s place in the world.

In addition, each year students are invited to participate in the Students for Development Internships – and students are now going to Ghana to conduct research and work there.
