A first-class teaching and research institution, the University of New Brunswick (UNB) is one of the oldest public universities in North America. Located in Eastern Canada, UNB enrols nearly 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students on its campuses in Fredericton and Saint John and many more in programs around the world.

Now in its third century, the Fredericton campus is home to 11 academic faculties: arts, business administration, computer science, education, engineering, forestry and environmental management, kinesiology, law, nursing, Renaissance College and science. It is also connected to one of the most advanced computing networks in Canada.

The fast-growing UNB Saint John has three academic faculties – arts; business; and science, applied science and engineering – and an international focus.

Attracted by world-renowned programs and researchers, students come to UNB from more than 100 countries around the globe.

The university’s innovative offerings include concurrent degree programs – such as the MBA/LLB and the BA/BSc – which allow students to pursue two degrees simultaneously, and a unique undergraduate program in interdisciplinary leadership studies.

UNB is also known for quality. The Law School is consistently ranked among Canada’s best, and the forest engineering program is the only accredited program of its kind in the country. UNB’s MA in creative writing counts Alistair MacLeod and Wayne Johnston among its award-winning alumni.

Biomedical engineering and ocean mapping are just two of the research areas for which UNB is recognized. Home to the National Research Council’s $37.5-million Institute for Information Technology, UNB also has the only NASA-supported Regional Planetary Image facility in Canada.

With eight varsity teams, a large number of extra-curricular clubs and activities, and cultural offerings ranging from art galleries to resident musicians and writers, UNB offers a student experience that’s second to none.

Student assistance
Undergraduate: Close to 1,200 students attend UNB annually on entrance scholarships, ranging from $500 to $50,000. About 350 renewable scholarships are awarded each year. UNB has four Currie Undergraduate scholarships, each having a total value of $50,000. UNB guarantees high school students scholarship support as follows: grades between 80 percent and 84.9 percent – $500, between 85 percent and 89.9 percent – $1,000, 90 percent or higher – at least $1,500 in total scholarship support. About 69 percent of first-year students hold scholarships. Also, bursaries ranging from $100 - $2,500 may be available to full and part-time students experiencing financial need. Approximately 2,300 students each year receive undergraduate and entrance scholarships.

Graduate: Graduate students have access to over 300 awards, of which some are based on research merit and others on financial need. Bursaries, and numerous scholarships, such as the Dr. John S. Little International Study Fellowships and the School of Graduate Studies Travel Grants allow graduate students to travel to conferences and to work with institutions abroad. UNB also offers a number of recruiting awards, such as the Dr. William S. Lewis Doctoral Fellowships ($25,000/year for up to four years), the David Armstrong Doctoral Fellowship in Chemistry and Physics ($25,000 per year), or the President’s Doctoral Tuition Awards (the cost of tuition for three years). Finally, the University of New Brunswick students have typically had an above-average success rate in graduate-level Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada award competitions.

University research

UNB’s research focuses on natural resources and environment, health and wellness, advanced technology, the knowledge-based economy, and New Brunswick as a socio-cultural research environment. These are strengths that UNB contributes as an intellectual, social and economic driving force for the province, region and country.

The university highlights for students the diverse, innovative nature of faculty/student research, supports undergraduate students research assistantships, organizes graduate-student research-funding workshops; supports an annual graduate research conference; allocates funds for paper presentations at conferences, provides graduate research assistantship funding, and requires public defences and external reviews for all theses.

As a comprehensive university, UNB offers research intensity and cross-disciplinary opportunities within an environment where faculty and students still have a one-to-one relationship. A recent successful fundraising campaign of more than $100 million speaks to the respect enjoyed by the university and to its commitment to keeping scholarships and research infrastructure in the foreground.

International education

The Fredericton and Saint John campuses offer international exchange, internship and field course programs in more than 35 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North, Central and South America. They provide opportunities for research collaboration and for students to pursue studies in the faculties of arts, business administration, computer science, education, engineering, forestry and environmental management, hospitality and tourism, kinesiology, law, nursing and science.

The student abroad program promotes and facilitates international opportunities for UNB students by providing information and assistance at various levels including pre-departure and re-entry sessions as well as financial assistance to students engaging in international credit granting opportunities.
