Profile

Mount Royal University is Canada's oldest new undergraduate university. Building on 99 years of academic excellence, Mount Royal received permission from the Government of Alberta in September, 2009 to change its name from Mount Royal College to Mount Royal University.

What has not changed is Mount Royal’s focus on the success of its students. Some 400 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty from every discipline share a passion for teaching that is informed by leading-edge scholarship. Smaller classes; highly qualified faculty who know students by name; personalized student support services; a single-minded dedication to premier undergraduate learning — all remain distinctive elements of the Mount Royal University experience.

For more than 13,000 students each year, Mount Royal’s programs combine liberal and applied studies to provide individual fulfillment, opportunities for further studies and employment to its graduates.

Mount Royal offers more than 60 degree, applied degree, diploma and certificate programs through seven faculties: Faculty of Arts, Bissett School of Business, Faculty of Communication Studies, Faculty of Health and Community Studies, Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Teaching and Learning and the Mount Royal University Conservatory.

The Faculty of Teaching and Learning — unique in Canada — also enables faculty to conduct teaching–learning research, participate in scholarly exchanges and enrich their teaching skills.

Located in Calgary, Alberta, Mount Royal shares many characteristics with its diverse and dynamic host city: innovation, friendliness, entrepreneurial energy and limitless potential. The park-like campus is centrally located, giving easy access to all the city has to offer — and to spectacular outdoor recreation opportunities in the foothills and Rocky Mountains.

The university is home to research-focused institutes including the Institute for Nonprofit Studies, the Integrative Health Institute and the Institute for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. A new Centre for Child Well-Being and a Criminal Justice Research Lab were both launched in 2009.

With all of those strengths, as well as a vibrant international education program, personalized academic and student support services, highly successful athletics teams, modern facilities and an outstanding recreation centre, Mount Royal University is a diverse, scholarly community where students come face-to-face with their own incredible potential every day.

University research

Research at Mount Royal University seeks to create knowledge that benefits society. Faculty and students are engaged in research activities across the university, with the integration of teaching and research an important theme of research at Mount Royal. Undergraduate students are encouraged to take active roles in faculty research projects and many faculty bring their own research into the classroom.

Mount Royal’s areas of research excellence include research on the not-for-profit sector. Mount Royal is home to the Institute for Nonprofit Studies, which is a leader in Canada on research on the governance and sustainability of the not-for-profit sector and in the analysis of not-for-profit policy. Other areas of research excellence are health and wellness, community-based research, criminal justice and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

International education

Mount Royal University’s international education program gives students opportunities to enrich their education and expand their understanding of the world through a variety of international experiences. Mount Royal is the leading postsecondary institution nation-wide for participation in the International Academic Mobility Program, sponsored by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.

Mount Royal has institutional partnerships with more than 70 universities in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand, North America and South America. These partnerships allow students from these institutions to experience a Mount Royal education, and Mount Royal students to study at other universities.

Faculty-led study tours enable students to earn credits while gaining new perspectives on their studies, through experiences such as working on an archaeological dig in Jordan; making a documentary film with students in Mexico; and studying the criminal justice system in Germany.

Many Mount Royal programs include an international directed field studies element that gives students the option of gaining work experience in a different country. An international disability studies work practicum in Winchester, England and a nursing practicum in Sweden are just two examples.

Mount Royal University also welcomes hundreds of international students every year to the Languages Institute, which offers English language programs.
