Profile
The University of Manitoba offers a diverse range of programs, including a full complement of professional programs.
It offers master’s and doctoral programs and opportunities for postdoctoral education in many disciplines. The university has special access programs for those who do
not have the background required for university entrance. The continuing education division offers a large variety
of professional and certificate programs.
Most students complete the first year of their degree programs in University 1, a program that allows students to take the specific courses required for one or more faculties and schools, while at the same time ensuring there is good exposure to courses in several disciplines or professions.
A research-intensive university, the University of Manitoba is home to 37 research centres and institutes including applied ethics, aging, cell biology, transportation, health policy, earth observation science and theoretical physics. These centres and institutes provide unique interdisciplinary educational and training opportunities and are a valuable resource for the community at large. Our Technology Transfer Office facilitates the commercialization of university research by linking research expertise to business, industry, government agencies and other universities.
The University of Manitoba’s main Fort Garry campus is nestled by the Red River, about 12 km from downtown Winnipeg. The faculties of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, as well as the schools of medical rehabilitation and dental hygiene, are all located on the Bannatyne campus in central Winnipeg, adjacent to the Health Sciences Centre, the province’s largest tertiary care complex. Satellite locations are situated in other parts of the city as well as in rural Manitoba.

Student assistance
Undergraduate: In 2009 over 1,100 first-year student received entrance scholarships totaling over $1.6 million. The awards and scholarships for continuing university students add up to over $6 million. These amounts, plus a further $300,000 in athletic scholarships, $4 million in university bursaries (based primarily on financial need), and nearly $1.3 million in scholarship and bursary funds from outside agencies administered by the university mean that more than $14 million dollars is made available to University of Manitoba student to offset the costs of their university studies. Awards are available to certain under-represented groups, such as women students in the physical sciences and Aboriginal students.
University research
The University of Manitoba currently holds 48 Canada Research Chairs. It is also home to an additional 19 endowed and sponsored research chairs, created through contributions from individuals, government agencies, foundations and/or corporations providing targeted support in defined research fields. Our Technology Transfer Office ranks third nationally in terms of royalty revenue as a percentage of research income. Since 2005, this office has generated revenue of $9.1 million and 450 patents covering 300 technologies. Smartpark, located on our Fort Garry campus, is one of Canada’s fastest growing university-based research and development parks, and is home to some of the country’s most innovative companies. In the past nine years, tenants have grown from three in one facility to 20 in seven facilities, including the addition of a business incubator—the eureka project.
International education
The International Centre for Students (ICS) provides specialized non-academic advising and support services to 2,500 international and exchange students. It coordinates a university-wide student exchange program that facilitates mobility between the University of Manitoba and its 40 partner institutions in 20 countries around the world. The University of Manitoba is a member of the Canadian Student Exchange Consortium, CONAHEC, the University of the Arctic, the north2north program, as well as the co-op Japan Program. ICS manages the World W.I.S.E. Resource Centre and facilitates the development of short-term internships and service learning experiences, both at home and abroad.
