Profile

Luther College is a corporation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, and it has two campuses in Regina; one is a federated college at the University of Regina. Luther College's academic courses and student services are fully integrated with the University of Regina, but the college is administratively and financially independent. Luther College aims to provide a strong liberal arts education within a closely-knit, supportive community. Through academic offerings, residences and student life programs, the college provides an environment that fosters not only academic growth, but also spiritual development and community involvement.

Luther offers a variety of courses in arts, fine arts and science. Luther courses are open to all students on campus, but some seats are reserved for Luther College students. Luther students have access to all University of Regina courses, including courses offered by two other federated colleges, and pay the same tuition fees as other University of Regina students. Students can also enrol in pre-professional studies at Luther College at the University of Regina before seeking admission into professional programs.

Luther College’s professors possess graduate degrees from across North America and Europe, and they are actively engaged in scholarly work in their respective fields of specialization. Luther’s professors are well-known on campus for their teaching expertise and their care for students. Luther is renowned for its student-centered academic advising staff. Faculty and staff at Luther College are committed to helping students realize their academic goals and fulfill their potential.

Student facilities and services

Personal support services
Luther College upholds the Christian faith as expressed in the Lutheran tradition but welcomes and supports students of all faiths and beliefs. The chaplaincy program provides a variety of formal and informal programs on issues of faith, justice and learning. Students may grow spiritually through worship, prayer, study and personal reflection. The college’s chaplain, student peer chaplains, staff and faculty are willing to explore questions of faith and life with interested students.

Academic support services
Academic advisors, career planning sessions, volunteer placement, auditorium, chapel, student association, library, residence, cafeteria and coffee stop, lounge area, chaplaincy, services for special needs students, student centre. (See the University of Regina chapter for further information.)

First-year student programs
Luther College offers specialized first-year programming designed to assist with the transition from high school to university, helping students find academic success. The programs offer courses taught over the fall and winter semesters of the first year. The courses are tied together by a theme or common interest, and they encourage students to make connections between academic disciplines and to make longtime friends. Any first-year student registered through arts, science, fine arts of pre-professional programs is eligible to enrol.

Luther also creates leadership opportunities for its students through the Luther leader ambassador program. The program is a great way for Luther university and residence students to gain valuable volunteer experience. Luther Leaders help promote the college to prospective students and participate in numerous college events. Students can also get involved in the Luther University students’ association (LUSA), which organizes dances, recreation nights and other social activities for Luther students. LUSA also represents Luther College students on various college, University of Regina and University of Regina Students' Union committees. 

Housing
On-campus: There are over 200 dormitory-style rooms in the Luther College residence. All rooms in the residence are single-occupancy and fully-furnished. There are different floors for men and women. Student residence fees include a room, all-you-can-eat meal plans in the Luther College cafeteria, laundering facilities, local phone service and internet access. The Luther College residence is open to all postsecondary students, including those from the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology, the University of Regina and other U of R federated colleges. Students should apply early as the residence is filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Student assistance
Undergraduate: Luther College offers dedicated scholarship opportunities to its students. Luther College students are also eligible to apply for University of Regina scholarships. Approximately 30 percent of the annual scholarship funding is designated for entering students.

University research

All faculty members at Luther College have active research programs. Current research projects include end-of-life care for persons of aboriginal ancestry, abuse of intimate partners, sexual practices and health of teenagers and young adults, First Nations perspectives and practices around health and healing, post-traumatic stress disorder, spiritual practices and health, interreligious dialogue, feminist scholarship, renaissance and early-modern studies, 18th-century theatre, commonwealth literature, science and technology, fluid flows, sustainability, political ecology in Ghana and Latin American revolutions. Most faculty are actively involved in undergraduate- and graduate-student thesis supervision. One of Luther College’s strengths is its focus on undergraduate teaching and mentoring, which create opportunities for undergraduates to obtain research experience. The college provides a variety of funding opportunities to encourage student research.

International education

Luther College values the importance of human and social diversity and encourages students to meet and understand people from different cultural backgrounds. Luther students have opportunities to participate in Luther study-abroad courses. Exchange programs are available to Luther students through the University of Regina. Students may study in countries including Australia, China, Germany, England, France, Mexico and the United States.
