Kwantlen Polytechnic University

Profile

Initially founded as a community college in 1981, granted university college status in 1995 and university status in 2008, Kwantlen Polytechnic University has grown and adapted to meet the changing and expanding needs of its local, national and international communities. Today, Kwantlen is the fourth largest university in British Columbia, serving more than 17,000 students each year across its four campuses in the Lower Mainland communities of Cloverdale, Langley, Surrey and Richmond.

Kwantlen offers more than 130 programs, including trades training, vocational education, qualifying studies, professional studies, and liberal arts and sciences. To fulfill its commitment to provide a broad range of life-long educational opportunities, Kwantlen has intentionally developed an integrated array of citations, certificates, diplomas and degrees that afford students maximum flexibility to pursue, over the course of their lives and careers, different educational pathways to degree credentials.

Kwantlen provides its students, communities and industry partners with innovative options that facilitate efficient and effective access to academic and professional programs. Kwantlen has a long history of offering degree programs to meet the evolving needs of regional and global employment markets. But our mission goes beyond preparing students for successful careers: we create an exceptional learning environment committed to preparing learners for leadership, service and success.

Preparing learners for leadership is about encouraging students, graduates and employees to take active roles in their families, communities, workplaces and the university. It is about participation, engagement and responsible citizenship. Kwantlen aspires to have its students, graduates and employees embrace the notion that advanced education brings with it a duty to make a difference in our communities and in our world.

Some important components of the Kwantlen experience include flexible learning options and environments, working in small groups with award-winning faculty committed to both their teaching and their research, and the opportunity to engage in hands-on education through cooperative learning, community action research, practicum placements, undergraduate research and much more.

Kwantlen has a tradition of incorporating undergraduate research into programs, preparing students for success in graduate school and in their careers. Kwantlen faculty have a growing record of support from public and private funders.

Kwantlen’s Institute of Transborder Studies contributes to an interdisciplinary network of researchers across several continents. The Institute for Sustainable Community Development brings faculty from a variety of disciplines into partnership with school districts, government agencies, and community groups. The Institute for Sustainable Horticulture is anticipating the opening of a bio-control product development laboratory and a geothermal research greenhouse that will support research in integrated pest management, green energy and climate control systems. Kwantlen’s research capacity, based upon our 25-year history of responding to the needs of our region, creates innovative results which benefit communities, our faculty and our students.

International education

Kwantlen is committed to providing its students with a range of international opportunities. Students in many disciplines will have international study integrated directly into their program. Some examples of this include internships in Thailand for nursing students, study tours in Colombia for interior design students and summer courses in France for fashion students.

In addition to embedding international education experiences within academic programs, students can also participate in a range of bilateral exchange opportunities. Exchange agreements exist with partners in over 16 countries and students from our partner institutions have the option of academic study, internship and intensive language training. With over 65 countries represented within our international student body, Kwantlen offers a diverse and welcoming study experience.
