Student facilities and services

Personal support services
A team of student development professionals provides a range of services addressing the whole person, including the physical, social, emotional, vocational and spiritual. Services include spiritual formation, chapel, small groups, student clubs, student newspaper, career guidance, support for students with disabilities, international students’ association, social events, psychological counselling, leadership development, community service projects and employment assistance. Students may apply for a range of on-campus positions through the Enrolments Services department. Due to recent changes in government regulation, international students may now also work off-campus.

Academic support services
The orientation program for first-year students and the first-year initiative seminar outlined below provide new students with a solid foundation for succeeding in their academic programs. In addition, King’s also provides a tutoring service, administered by the student life office, for any student who is experiencing academic difficulty in one or more of their classes. This service is provided free of charge to students as part of King’s commitment to help them succeed in their studies. Special programs are in place for university-level proficiency in English. An inclusive postsecondary program for students with developmental disabilities has also been initiated recently in partnership with the Alberta Association for Community Living.

First-year student programs
A comprehensive orientation program is designed for all first-year students, which includes an introduction to the university mission and vision, campus life initiatives, worship, academic and non-academic policies, introduction to the Students’ Association and clubs, safety awareness and training, social events, parents’ welcome and more. Students are given the opportunity to meet with their faculty advisors and with peer groups within their discipline. In addition, an optional first-year initiative seminar offers students skill training that enhances the student experience and increases potential for a successful transition to university.

Student assistance
Undergraduate: The King’s University College awards scholarships of $1,000 and $2,000 to all incoming students with high school averages over 80 percent and 90 percent respectively. Athletic scholarships are also available. Students may also apply for financial awards which range in value up to $3,000 and are based on academic merit, financial need, Christian commitment, university involvement and career intentions. The university college’s students receive over $400,000 in financial assistance in the form of scholarships, bursaries and other financial awards, which accounts for approximately 10 percent of the total tuition paid.

University research

“Research solutions come in all shapes and sizes” summarizes the approach to research at King’s. Research may be discovery, applied, interdisciplinary or pedagogical. Training of undergraduates in laboratory, field or literature research, including co-publication, is a particular strength. Many projects are collaborative with other universities, non-government organizations, community groups or international partnerships. The King’s Centre for Visualization in Science is developing computer-based teaching tools for high school science teachers to simulate properties and processes in chemistry and physics with real-world applications such as climate change. Research with implications for social policy include Alberta’s oil sands, pluriformity in Alberta’s public education system and national delivery of men’s health services. Sustainability in business, communities and resource-based livelihoods in Africa is the research focus of international partnerships with NGOs and other universities.

International education

Related to the efforts described previously, and of particular note, are King’s efforts to equip students to be internationally knowledgeable, culturally competent and transforming agents in Canada and abroad. The Honduras Water Project annually sends service-learning teams to a remote Honduran village to both learn about poverty and development firsthand, and work alongside residents in constructing a community water system. King’s new MICAH Centre focuses on transformational development and social justice aims to provide students with further transformative experiences that shape their educational and vocational choices. Recent MICAH international internships have been arranged in places such as Bangladesh, Tanzania and Kenya. In addition, more than 25 off-campus study programs are available in various locations around the world.
